Khulisa Umntfwana implemented a Social and Behavioural Change Communication campaign at the Buganu Ceremony to advance HIV prevention and health promotion. Central to the initiative was increasing comprehensive HIV prevention knowledge and encouraging safer behaviours such as consistent condom use, and reduction of multiple concurrent relationships. Peer educators used storytelling and cultural metaphors to dispel myths. Mobile testing units, IEC materials, and condom distribution points ensured that communities had both information and access to services.
The campaign also addressed critical social drivers of HIV, including gender-based violence and stigma. Interactive drama performances and open dialogues on power dynamics, respectful relationships, and GBV reporting pathways were conducted. Testimonies and dialogues promoted fidelity, trust, and responsibility, while role models emphasized prioritizing education and personal growth. Participants were guided on initiating age-appropriate conversations about sexuality and HIV, supported by drama performances to strengthen family communication.
Finally, the campaign reinforced health-seeking behaviours by encouraging mothers to attend antenatal clinics and adhere to ART, promoting voluntary HIV testing and counselling, and providing family planning and STI treatment information. By combining cultural resonance with practical service uptake, the campaign contributed to reducing new HIV infections, tackling stigma, and empowering communities to adopt healthier, more resilient behaviours.
