Care Innovation Grantee!
Tanzania faces significant health challenges, with malaria being a leading cause of illness and death, particularly in rural areas. Despite efforts like insecticide-treated nets and antimalarial treatments, the disease remains widespread. HIV/AIDS and tuberculosis also affect many, with high HIV rates exacerbating TB transmission. Non-communicable diseases like diabetes and hypertension are rising due to urbanization and changing lifestyles. Limited healthcare access, especially in rural areas, and a shortage of trained professionals affect progress. There is a high mortality rate that remains a critical concern, despite ongoing improvements in healthcare services.
Wekeza is a non-profit organization located in a village within the region of Mwanza,
Tanzania. Mwanza is a port city that lies on the southern part of Lake Victoria, making it a malaria-risk location due to the humidity attracting mosquitos.
Wekeza contains a hospital facility with paid and unpaid doctors who offer treatments and necessary procedures for low-income communities. These patients are typically from the llemela, Nyamangana, and Mwanza regions of Tanzania, as well as immigrants that pass through the region.
