SITUATIONAL UPDATE: DUK COUNTY SECURITY SITUATION.
To the people of Duk County and the general public,
We wish to provide an update on the security situation following the incident that occurred in Duk Padiet on the morning of August 25, 2026 and later escalated at approximately 4:00 PM the same day.
Based on the information currently available to us, we regret to report that six people lost their lives and nearly 20 others were injured during this unfortunate incident. Our thoughts and prayers are with the families who lost their loved ones, those who were injured, and all those affected during this painful time.
We are relieved to inform the public that calm has since returned to the affected area, following the timely intervention of our community leaders, particularly the traditional chiefs under the leadership of Sultan Deng Mabur Malual, Paramount Chief of Duk County. Our chiefs and other community leaders have taken important steps to de-escalate tensions and have called upon the youth to disengage and exercise maximum restraint.
We wish to emphasize that this incident should not be attributed collectively to any community, clan, or group. Based on the information currently available, it arose from the actions of individuals disagreements and the full circumstances must be properly established. We therefore strongly discourage speculation, collective blame, inflammatory statements, or any communication that could contribute to further violence. We urge our youth and everyone to avoid spreading unverified information on social media.
Our immediate priorities are to preserve calm, disengage the youth, protect lives, and create an environment in which the facts surrounding the incident can be properly established.
Senior community leaders, under the leadership of Gen. Kezekia Ruei Puot and Dr. Yath Awan Yath, together with other prominent leaders, including Hon. Philip Thon Leek and Hon. James Yien Jal, among others, continue to coordinate efforts aimed at maintaining calm and preventing further escalation.
We appeal to every member of our community, particularly our youth, elders, intellectuals, leaders, and those using social media, to act as ambassadors of peace during this difficult moment. This is a time for restraint, responsible communication, reconciliation, and unity. We strongly reject any attempt to incite violence, spread misinformation, or mobilize people against one another.
We are deeply grateful to our friends and neighbours in Bor County, Twic East, Greater Akobo, Greater Fangak, and across South Sudan who have expressed concern and solidarity with our people. Your prayers, messages of peace, and support are deeply appreciated.
We also appeal to the Jonglei State Government and the National Government to urgently deploy appropriate security personnel to the affected areas to protect civilians, reinforce calm, and prevent any further escalation.
We remain committed to a peaceful and lasting resolution of this situation. We pray that God grants wisdom to our traditional chiefs, community leaders, government authorities, youth leaders, and all those involved in the ongoing peace efforts.
Let us choose peace over revenge, dialogue over confrontation, and forgiveness over division.
