Statement by the National Network Against Tribalism in South Sudan
The National Network Against Tribalism in South Sudan strongly condemns the speech made by Gen. Johnson Olony, in which he allegedly instructed his forces to kill all Nuer people, whether civilians or those associated with the government.
According to reports, Gen. Olony told his forces advancing to the frontlines in northern Jonglei: “When we arrive there, don’t spare an elderly person, don’t spare a chicken, don’t spare a house or anything.”
Such statements amount to incitement to ethnic violence and collective punishment, which are completely against the laws, customs, and moral values of the people of South Sudan.
Hate speech and calls for violence based on ethnicity violate the Constitution of South Sudan, military rules of conduct, and international humanitarian law. They threaten national unity, peaceful coexistence, and the future of our country.
We call upon the leadership of the South Sudan People’s Defence Forces (SSPDF), including the Chief of General Staff, Gen. Paul Nang Majok, to publicly condemn this speech, investigate the matter, and take appropriate disciplinary action to ensure accountability and prevent further violence.
South Sudan belongs to all its people. No community should be targeted, and no leader should use tribal hatred as a weapon.
