This marks another milestone in Mr. Charles Ochaya’s journey.

After receiving a tricycle through the coordination of The First Step with the Physical Rehabilitation Referral Center (PRRC)in Juba South Sudan, Mr. Charles spent time learning how to safely use his new mobility device before making his journey back home.

For someone who lost both his right arm and right leg due to diabetes, this is more than just a tricycle—it’s renewed independence, given dignity, and the freedom to move again.

A heartfelt thanks to PRRC for making this life-changing support available at no cost, and to everyone working to ensure that persons with disabilities have access to the mobility and rehabilitation services they deserve.

Every journey begins with “The First Step”—and Mr. Charles is now moving forward.

Restoring Mobility, Giving Dignity.

Mr. Charles Ochaya, a loving father and former diver living in Juba, South Sudan, has received a tricycle completely FREE of charge to improve his mobility and independence.

Charles was one of the beneficiaries of The Hand Project during our prosthetic fitting camp in December 2025 at Scenius Hub, where he received an upper-limb prosthetic hand.

His journey has been one of remarkable resilience. In May 2023, he lost his right arm above the elbow (transhumeral amputation) due to complications from diabetes. Two years later, in November 2025, he also lost his right leg below the knee (transtibial amputation), again because of diabetes.

Losing both an arm and a leg on the same side created significant mobility challenges, often leaving him dependent on his 10-year-old daughter, Anna, to help him move from place to place.

Through the coordination of The First Step, Charles was referred to the Physical Rehabilitation Referral Center (PRRC) which is under the Ministry of Gender, Child and Social Welfare and supported by ICRC. After assessment, he was provided with a tricycle completely free of charge, enabling him to move around more independently and participate more actively in his daily life.

This support is more than the provision of an assistive device—it is a step toward restoring independence, and hope. Access to mobility should never be limited by one’s ability to pay.

We extend our sincere appreciation to the team at the Physical Rehabilitation Referral Center (PRRC) for their dedication and generosity in providing this life-changing support at no cost. Their commitment continues to make a meaningful difference in the lives of persons with disabilities across South Sudan.

It is with deep sadness that we mourn the passing of Mr. Bullen Lado Solomon, one of our treasured beneficiaries of the Hand Project.

He was more than a beneficiary; he was family.
His strength and resilience many lives and will never be forgotten.

Sometimes the most powerful moments happen when you least expect them.

Days back, while on the road, we ran into one of the beneficiaries of The Hand Project, Mr. Deng Nyuot going about his day — confidently using his prosthetic hand. It was a quiet yet powerful reminder that what we do extends far beyond simply fitting a device.

Seeing him actively using his hand in his daily life was deeply moving. It spoke of his love for it, given dignity, and the beauty of second chances.

Moments like this remind us that every hand we fit is more than a prosthetic — it’s a step toward increased independence, confidence, and a life rebuilt.
