TEAM ORIENTATION ON (RISK COMMUNICATION & COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT) FOR EBOLA VIRUS DISEASE (EVD)

Team orientation plays an important role by ensuring that accurate, timely, culturally appropriate, and trusted information on Ebola Virus Disease (EVD) reaches individuals, families, community leaders, health workers, and other stakeholders. This is to strengthen staff capacity on the and how to best deliver it.

We are currently responding in Eastern Equatoria on BEVD with support from save the Children International (SCI) by carrying out RCCE activities across 4 Counties of Magw/Nimule, Torit, Kapoeta East and Kapoeta South.

Our team continues to implement awareness activities on ( ) in targeted schools, Health Facilities and Community centers including door-door campaigns in Nimule, Magwi, Torit and Kapoeta (South & East).

The awareness sessions focused on providing important information on , including its , and $symptoms, measures, and the importance of of suspected cases.

The activity is part of CSI-SCI’s ongoing Risk Communication and Community Engagement (RCCE) interventions aimed at strengthening awareness, promoting preventive practices, and enhancing community preparedness for BEVD among learners and the wider community.

The current Project in Eastern Equatoria State covers 4 Counties of , , and

We conducted the Orientation of Community Volunteers, School Managements and learners on Ebola Preparedness and Response, benefiting over 20,000 (both children and adults) across the 4 Counties of Eastern Equatoria.

The sessions were conducted for community volunteers, including MTMSG members and Community Nutrition Volunteers (CNVs), on Ebola Virus Disease (EVD) preparedness and response. The sessions covered Ebola transmission, signs and symptoms, prevention measures, adherence to public health and infection prevention practices, and the importance of early detection and timely reporting of suspected cases to health authorities.

The activity was implemented in Kapoeta South County, Eastern Equatoria State, and will be replicated in Nimule, Magwi, Torit, and Kapoeta East to strengthen community awareness and enhance the capacity of community volunteers to support surveillance, risk communication, and early response efforts across the targeted locations.

We also facilitated training for Teachers, School leaders, PTAs/SMCs and learners on Prevention Mechanisms who inturn conducted and will continue to conduct school Health Education & awarenesses through regular classroom talks and assemblies on symptoms, transmission and prevention alongside lessons.

Inline with National preparedness efforts and the Ministry of Health's Ebola Preparedness framework, Save the Children International Engaged Community Support Initiative -CSI to support the implementation of Risk Communication and Community Engagement ( ) interventions in Selected High risk Counties of ( ), , and .

SOUTH SUDAN: REACTIVE STATEMENT ON SAVE THE CHILDREN’S BRANDED VEHICLE BEING USED BY ARMED ACTORS

Save the Children is aware of media reports and images being circulated on social media showing a vehicle displaying our branding and being used by armed actors. The vehicle in question is one of four Save the Children vehicles that were forcibly taken in January this year, before armed gangs then looted and burnt down a Save the Children office and destroyed a healthcare centre in Walgak in South Sudan’s eastern Jonglei state in early February, as reported in this press release ( https://www.savethechildren.net/news/south-sudan-save-children-office-and-healthcare-centre-destroyed-and-looted-violence-escalates ).
Since the seizure, the vehicles have not been under Save the Children’s control or operation.

We strongly condemn the misuse of humanitarian assets and reiterate that Save the Children does not support or facilitate the activities of any armed actor. Save the Children remains committed to our humanitarian principles of neutrality, independence and impartiality in serving children and families in need.

"Help children rebuild their lives".

Education provides opportunities to learn, develop essential life skills, and build a more secure future despite the challenges of displacement, poverty, and conflict".

Pastoralist communities in Tonj South County and other parts of South Sudan face significant barriers to education because many families move seasonally with their cattle. Children often spend long periods in cattle camps, making it difficult to attend regular schools. Limited school infrastructure, poverty, insecurity, early marriage, and long distances to schools further reduce enrollment and completion rates, particularly for girls.

Community Support Initiative (CSI) is a South Sudanese humanitarian and development organization founded in 2012. Its education programs focus on increasing access to quality education for vulnerable children and communities by:

1. Encouraging school enrollment for children and adults.

2. Supporting the establishment of schools in remote communities where access is limited.

2. Promoting the "Leave No Child Behind" campaign.

4. Advocating for girls' education and the prevention of child and forced marriage.

5. Training teachers, Parent-Teacher Associations (PTAs), and School Management Committees (SMCs) to improve the quality of education.

COMMEMORATION OF "THE DAY OF THE AFRICAN CHILD" IN BOR, JONGLEI STATE -SOUTH SUDAN.

WHAT: The Day of the African Child is commemorated every year on 16 June to honor the children who participated in the Soweto Uprising in South Africa in 1976 and to raise awareness about children's rights across Africa.

WHY: It remembers the courage and sacrifice of school children who protested against unequal education.

It highlights the importance of quality education, protection, health, and well-being for all African children.

It encourages governments, organizations, and communities to address challenges affecting children, such as poverty, child labor, discrimination, and lack of access to education.

Theme

"Every child deserves a safe, inclusive, and quality education."

The Child Rights Club of Bor A Primary School, one of the 23 Schools supported by CSI/SCI participated in the commemoration of the Day of the African Child at Wise-Dove Primary School.

The event was participatory and attended by various partners Community Support Initiative -CSI UNICEF South Sudan, Save the Children South Sudan etc and Government officials. It was chaired by the Honorable Minister for General Education and Instruction.

Of great significance was the child participation as MC of the event who is also a member of the Child rights club of BOR A primary School.

Of another Significance;

Education, Protection from violence and exploitation, Healthcare, Participation in decisions affecting their lives, Equal opportunities regardless of background

The community leader of residents around the CSI office in Bor expresses their happiness after CSI graded a small portion of the road that blocks movement to the main road during the rainy season.

We Commenced distribution of Learning and Teaching Materials to 150 Learners at Mangek Pastoralist Education Program (PEP) Center (Liet Cattle Camp).

Assorted Learning and teaching materials were distributed to 150 learners at the Mangek PEP Center in Liet Cattle Camp, Tonj South County, Warrap State.

The exercise involved the provision of various educational supplies such as bicycles, Tents and teacher kits to facilitators and school bags, exercise books, pens, pencils, tarpaulin, sitting mats etc to learners to support effective teaching and learning activities.

The distribution aimed to enhance access to quality learning resources, improve classroom participation, and create a more conducive learning environment for children living in the cattle camps.

By equipping facilitators with teaching aids and learners with essential educational materials, the initiative sought to strengthen learning outcomes, increase learner motivation, and promote continued access to education among vulnerable children in the area.

This intervention is expected to contribute to improved attendance, engagement, and academic performance while supporting the broader goal of ensuring that children in cattle camp communities have access to inclusive and quality education.
