Women Ignite South Sudan is deeply saddened by the fire outbreak in Custom Market, which have destroyed the hard work, savings, and hopes of countless traders especially women who depend on these small businesses to feed and educate their families.

These losses are not just goods; they are years of struggle, resilience, and sacrifice.

We call on government authorities, humanitarian partners, and the community to stand with these women by providing immediate relief, business recovery support, and stronger safety measures in our markets.

Women Ignite South Sudan stands with every woman whose livelihood was affected.
Together, we will rebuild.

Today, Women Ignite South Sudan (WISS) held a live talk show at Radio Nova FM to empower and inspire young women and the next generation. The discussion reflected on the September Dialogue on Women’s Participation in Civic Life and BuUrgent Action Fund-Africa Peace and Protection, emphasizing the urgent need to end Gender-Based Violence (GBV) in all forms.

As I shared during the conversation:

“If a boy child grows up knowing how to respect his sisters and mother, he will definitely continue to respect them even when he gets married. Others beat up their partners because they have seen their fathers beating their mothers.”

We must remember that change starts at home. The values we instill in our children shape the society we build tomorrow.

It was an honor to share this space with Paul Wol Akol, Executive Director of Compassion for Humanity Organization (CHO) and Youth Ally, as we both reaffirmed our shared commitment to raising a generation rooted in respect, empathy, and peace.

Let’s keep using our voices, platforms, and partnerships to say:
💜 — for every woman, every child, and every community.

While conversations about women’s empowerment continue to grow, we often overlook one crucial aspect children and child support. Many women are left to singlehandedly provide for their children, while some men feel comfortable fathering more children without considering the financial and emotional responsibilities that come with it.

We must ask ourselves whether our current economic realities truly allow families especially those with extended members, multiple wives, and many children to provide adequate food, clothing, education, and healthcare for everyone involved. When family responsibilities are not shared fairly, it is the children and mothers who suffer the most.

The absence, or poor enforcement, of laws that ensure child welfare and parental accountability creates deep injustice. A woman carries her child for nine months, nurtures and raises them, often sacrificing her own well-being, while some fathers abandon their responsibilities and move on without regard for the child’s needs for love, guidance, and support.

It’s time to start serious conversations about legal and policy reforms that make child support and parental accountability non-negotiable. Fathers should be held responsible financially, emotionally, and morally for the children they bring into this world.

True empowerment is not just about women’s rights; it’s about creating a fair system that protects children, supports mothers, and ensures that every child grows up with dignity, care, and equal opportunity.

Today, we celebrate the energy, creativity, and courage of young people who are shaping a better future for our communities and our world. International Youth Day is not just a date on the calendar, it is a call to action to invest in youth potential, amplify their voices, and work alongside them in building inclusive, peaceful, and prosperous societies.

As we reflect on this year’s theme, we are reminded of a simple but powerful truth: impact is greater when we go to the people, rather than waiting for them to come to us. Change happens faster when we meet communities where they are listening to their stories, understanding their challenges, and co-creating solutions together.

To our youth: your dreams, talents, and resilience are needed now more than ever. Step out, engage, and be the change in your own neighborhoods, schools, workplaces, and streets. Remember, leadership is not about position, it’s about presence.

Happy International Youth Day! Let’s take action with the people, not just for the people.
