The Leadership Crisis in South Sudan, A Deliberate Choice?

The Sudan People's Liberation Movement/Army (SPLM/A) has led South Sudan since its independence, with President Kiir at the helm. However, the country's democratic progress is being undermined by a lack of accountability and the concentration of power and resources among a select few.

A Culture of Impunity...
The president's relatives and close associates are exploiting their positions for personal gain, with no checks on their actions. This has led to widespread corruption, with oil revenues, gold, and other minerals being siphoned off for the benefit of a small elite. The consequences are stark:

- Oil money is diverted before it reaches the treasury
- Public funds are used to line the pockets of individuals
- Gold and other minerals are exploited for the benefit of the president's inner circle

A Deliberate Refusal to be Accountable...
The issue is not a lack of capacity or weak leadership, but rather a deliberate choice to prioritize personal interests over the welfare of the nation. The SPLM/A's refusal to be accountable has created a culture of impunity, where those in power feel they are above the law.

Consequences, A Country in Crisis...
The effects of this corruption are felt by all South Sudanese citizens. Civil servants and soldiers struggle to make ends meet, while the ruling elite live in opulence. The country's development is stunted, and its people are suffering.

The Republic of South Sudan, the world's youngest nation, has been embroiled in a brutal civil war since 2013, pitting the Sudan People's Liberation Movement (SPLM) and its offshoot, the SPLM-IO, against each other. The conflict has ravaged the country, leaving a trail of devastation, displacement, and despair in its wake. The poor and vulnerable citizens, who had pinned their hopes on independence, now find themselves trapped in a nightmare from which they cannot awaken.
