EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
Legacy Academy Nursery and Primary School is a community raised school established on March 6th 2023, targeting local population with a goal to endeavoring the future of the learners and as well as contributing to the education development of the country. It is located in Jebel check-point about 5 km South West of Juba, in a rather remote environment inaccessible by cars or other four wheeled vehicles due to the uneven terrain nature of the land. The area is notably not surveyed, with mixed densely rural-urban settlement of households, with children leading in population. ASDA carried assessment on the school on 20th of June with a mission of bringing light and improving the school conditions faced by the pupils which are in line with its core objectives.
OBJECTIVES
The following are objectives of the assessment carried out by ASDA ON 20TH JUNE 2024:
i. To support and provide quality education for school and needy children
ii. To enhance capacity building for the school and other learning enhancements for school children.
iii. To empower and provide educational needs for the school children
iv. To support child education
v. To improve school infrastructure
vi. To provide mentorship programs for school children
BACKDROP
African Sustainable Development Agency (ASDA) is a humanitarian non-profit non-governmental organization whose mission and vision are entwined in sustainable development with priority on education, healthcare and thriving or prospering of the communities that are most affected by underdevelopment. ASDA’s goal is to model a new approach in the ways in which humanitarian work is executed with the long term goal of having a learned, thriving, self-reliant and self-sufficient communities. We strongly believe that a community based school such as Legacy Academy Nursery and Primary school as our friend will be a key beneficiary of this mission as agreed and supported by the assessment done on 20th of June 2024.
SIGNIFICANCE AND BENEFITS
The goals of the African Sustainable Development Agency (ASDA) is to improve lives and rebuild communities in South Sudan and beyond ‘’Africa” Through healthcare, WASH, education, and economics initiatives including empowerment, educational opportunities, motivation, and encouraging young people and individual as well as work with various stakeholder in their local communities to participate in the system, put ideas together and to take action now to meet the standard of living among the communities in South Sudan. The assessment therefore shines a light and shall help in implementation of the above mentioned requisites by ASDA.
CHALLENGES THE SCHOOL FACES
Legacy Academy Nursery and Primary School is located in the outskirts of juba, the school kids are facing various challenges as follow:
i. Once it rains, the school administration indefinitely suspends the learning due to leaking roofs, wetting the floor, which force the kids to sit in mud.
ii. Lack of learning and writing materials
iii. The structure of the building always seem to collapse when it rain with too much wind.
iv. There was day a learner was despised because the school ran out of drinking water.
v. There are no desks for school kids the use matt which give the hard time to write and there’s table for the teachers
vi. The latrine is not safe for the ladies since its open. Health club rise serious concern about outbreak of malaria while there’s no emergency first Aid kits, no health center in the area.
vii. No venue for extra curriculum activities such as sports and talent show hall
viii. There is no feeding program which affect learners, with some going back home at break time till the next day
ix. Teachers come from far distance due to lack of enough incentive or salary to facilitate their transportation
COUNTERING THOSE CHALLENGES
Since the school lacks capacity and the community cannot afford to cater for some of those needs, ASDA plans to assist Legacy Academy Nursery and Primary School as a friend in order for the school to realize its dream through progress by increasing capacity building and develop its educational capacity for the future of the learners.
IMPLEMENTATION PLAN
ASDA implementation plan will be in line with its vision and mission on sustainability, prioritizing the development of education sector in this vulnerable community that is remotely positioned in the Southwest of Juba. In that case, ASDA needs funds and to strategize with full implementation to help Legacy Academy Nursery Primary School in fulfilling its educational goals by making sure such or some of those challenges are solved, with long-lasting solutions that are sustainable.
CONCLUSSION
The assessment carried out by ASDA will help facilitates the strategizing of sustainable development through supporting of education and WASH programs in Legacy Academy community school. ASDA will model a unique approach in enhancing capacity building and initiation of support to the school in order for learners and the school to benefit as a friend to ASDA and its friends.
