The research paper looks at how deepfakes, cloned voices and fabricated images threaten South Sudan's under-connected information space ahead of the December 2026 elections. It also covers what can be done to detect this content and respond to mis/disinformation.

Ahead of IndabaX South Sudan 2026, 46 young people with diverse skills came together for a hands-on machine learning workshop focused on turning concepts into practical skills.

At the workshop, participants worked with real datasets, prepared data, built and trained basic machine learning models, and explored how ML can solve practical problems.

As technology continues to reshape how we work and solve problems, South Sudan’s young people are actively participating in the evolution as creators, innovators and problem-solvers in their own right.

We continue to support and partner with initiatives that open doors for communities to learn, innovate and build.

Relying solely on digital literacy for civic education and awareness creates an information vacuum, leaving those without digital access on the margins of credible information. Between casting a ballot and empowering citizens to register, know their rights, and discern fact from rumour, a critical gap remains in South Sudan’s civic participation.

How does information actually reach people in environments where the digital systems to carry it are still being built?

Radio, by contrast, reaches most people and communicates in the languages they understand. Its content becomes the subject of conversation, debate, and social reinforcement, unlike the more isolated experience of online platforms.

A unique combination of reach, trust, and communal listening is precisely why radio drama can achieve what news bulletins or public service announcements cannot.

This was the focus of the Radio Drama Storyline Design Workshop, part of the Informing Democracy and Defending Freedoms in South Sudan project facilitated by Amalna-South Sudan. Demonstrating the power of radio as a medium to foster civic awareness.

Digital Rights Frontlines joined government, private sector, civil society, and other key stakeholders at the inaugural South Sudan Data Governance Capacity Building and Engagement Workshop, convened by the African Union Commission, AUDA-NEPAD, GIZ and KICTANet, in partnership with the Ministry of ICT & Postal Services-Republic of South Sudan

The three-day capacity-building sessions focused on data governance frameworks and principles, alignment with regional instruments, including the Malabo Convention, and multi-stakeholder collaboration on implementing data governance in South Sudan.

As the country advances key legislation & strategies, including those on Data Protection, civil society participation is essential to ensure emerging policies and laws protect human rights, strengthen accountability, and safeguard privacy. This program reinforced the role of civil society perspectives in South Sudan's digital policy and governance.

We remain committed to working with the government, the private sector, and civil society to support rights-respecting digital policies that reflect the realities and inclusivity of people in South Sudan.



African Union Collaboration on International ICT Policy in East and Southern Africa

In environments where unverified information spreads faster than facts, mis- and disinformation shape public perception faster than credible reporting can.

This is the premise behind the Mobile Journalism Programme by Digitalise Youth. A regional initiative under the Digital Democracy Initiative that equips young journalists with tools for ethical storytelling and civic participation in South Sudan.
