🎉 Meet Our Mobile Journalism Fellows!
We’re excited to announce the 27 successful participants who completed the Digitalise Youth Mobile Storytelling Training. A programme supported by the Digitalise Democracy Initiative to offer hands-on training, mentorship, and real-world learning.

The participants come from diverse fields yet share a common drive to build practical skills, using mobile tools to elevate underrepresented voices, challenge misinformation, and help build a more informed and engaged society.

Through a combination of training, mentorship, and story labs, the fellowship aimed to improve participants’ digital communication, creativity, and multimedia production skills. Positioning them as emerging mobile journalists capable of producing both video and graphic-based content.

DRF was proud to take part in a 2-day workshop on Radio Drama Storyline Design, facilitated by Amalna-South Sudan. The programme, held under the theme “Informing Democracy and Defending Freedoms,” aims to use radio dramas and civic education to promote informed, inclusive and peaceful participation in elections.

Officially opened by the Ministry of Peacebuilding’s Director for Conflict Resolution, Hon. Bol Diu Gok, the National Elections Commission (NEC) Commissioner, Mama Thabo, and the Executive Director of Amalna South Sudan, Mr Luate Joseph. The workshop brought together media practitioners, scriptwriters, producers, directors, storytellers, civic actors, and key stakeholders to design creative, engaging, and election-context-sensitive storylines.

Through collaborative discussions, participants developed storylines that addressed civic and voter education, democratic values, and peaceful participation in pre-election, during-election, and post-election periods. While directly confronting the threats that undermine an electoral process.

The workshop concluded with closing remarks from the Undersecretary National Ministry of Peace Building, Hon. Pia Philip, who emphasised centring peace and positive representation in storytelling as a key component for nation-building.

At Digital Rights Frontlines, we remain committed to standing alongside initiatives that empower citizens to combat mis/disinformation and to become active agents of peacebuilding.

AI-generated disinformation has added a new layer to South Sudan’s most fragile information ecosystems right as it heads into its first post-independence general election.

The country’s information ecosystem combines low literacy rates, concentrated platform use, an almost entirely unmoderated language environment and a single, under-resourced fact-checking initiative. All these combined make the information environment acutely vulnerable to synthetic media.

This paper examines the risk that AI-generated disinformation poses to a country that is simultaneously under-connected, under-moderated, and directly exposed to a large volume of synthetic content.

Environmental challenges are increasingly shaping patterns of conflict, displacement, and gender inequality across the Horn of Africa.​

Our latest research paper, "Climate, Gender and Conflict in the Horn of Africa: An In-Depth Synthesis of Evidence, Pathways and Policy Responses, with a Focus on South Sudan," brings together evidence from theory, policy, and practice to examine how climate stress intersects with insecurity and disproportionately affects women and girls.

The paper explores:
🌍The evolving climate–conflict debate and its policy implications.
⚠️The gendered impacts of climate-related crises, including rising gender-based violence and child marriage.
🤝The critical role of early warning and climate adaptation.

Our latest newsletter is out and full of momentum.

17 young women completed the Girls in ICT AI App Development Bootcamp, presenting four original app concepts in healthcare, agriculture, education, and youth employment in South Sudan.

On the policy front, our DRF team co-convened a Consultative Workshop on South Sudan's Data Protection Bill, 2025.

We also participated in the Early Warning for All workshop, which aimed to shape South Sudan's national crisis communication strategy.
