In our tradition as Azande, we do not call our father's brother uncle. Using the word uncle to refer to your father's brother is kind of disrespectful because in our culture you must see your dad's brother as your dad himself. Therefore, we call our dad's brothers Baba or Buba. The same thing happens with the sisters of our mothers. Our tradition does not allow us to call our mother's sisters aunty. We are expected to see her sisters as our mother too. That is why we call them Mama or Nina, which are also the same words we use to call our mothers.

So why don’t we use uncle and aunty to refer to our dad's brothers and mum's sisters?

The word aunty is translated to Pazande as Deriba (Dewiriba), which means my dad's sister, and the word uncle is translated in Pazande as ando. So basically, the word aunty you can only use it to refer to the sister of your father and not the sister of your mother. Again, the word uncle, which is ando in Pazande, you can only use it to refer to the brother of your mother and not the brother of your father.

Understand that this is our tradition, and do not bring other people's traditions into our community and dirty our culture which has been there for centuries.
Don’t disrespect your father by calling him uncle
Don’t disrespect your mother by calling her aunty
