Ten women-led civil society organizations from South Sudan have enhanced their skills, networks, and leadership capacity through a regional learning and exchange mission supported by UNDP and the African Development Bank Group hosted by FIDA-Kenyaunder the BRIDGE Project.

The mission provided practical training on transitional justice, legal aid services, governance, financial management, resource mobilization, and support for survivors of conflict-related sexual violence.

For the participants, the experience was more than professional development. It was an opportunity to learn new approaches that can improve services for women, girls, survivors of violence, internally displaced persons, and vulnerable communities.

"The knowledge and practical lessons we have gained will help us better serve women, internally displaced persons, victims and survivors of past violence, and strengthen our role as advocates for justice, healing and lasting peace in South Sudan," said Laura Elisama, Executive Director of Peace and Development Partners South Sudan.

South Sudan Advances Climate Finance and Carbon Market Readiness

The National Validation Workshop on South Sudan Carbon Market Framework marks a significant milestone in South Sudan’s efforts to strengthen climate governance and unlock new opportunities for sustainable development.

Led by the Ministry of Environment and Forestry, Republic of South Sudan with support from UNDP South Sudan, the workshop brings together key stakeholders to validate the National Carbon Market Framework, a governance instrument that will guide the country’s participation in international carbon markets under the Paris Agreement.

Participants will review governance arrangements, monitoring and reporting systems, environmental and social safeguards, benefit-sharing mechanisms, and institutional readiness to ensure transparent, equitable, and high-integrity carbon market participation.

The workshop is expected to deliver a validated framework, a clear implementation roadmap, and priority actions to strengthen institutional capacity, mobilize climate finance, and support implementation of South Sudan’s Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC).

These words from Rebecca, a mother who sought justice for her 9-year-old daughter, reflect the impact of the UNDP-supported 35-day GBV and Juvenile Mobile Court deployed at Juba National Prison from 10 June to 29 July 2026.

Implemented in partnership with the Judiciary of South Sudan, other key justice sector institutions, and UNMISS Corrections Unit, the Mobile Court was established to address a significant backlog of GBV and juvenile cases pending from 2022 to 2025 while bringing timely and accessible justice services closer to vulnerable communities.

âś… 92 of 109 case backlogs completed
âś… 118 of 138 remand detainees awaiting trial since 2022 were tried
âś… Reduced cases of prolonged pre-trial detention
âś… Improved access to justice for survivors, children, and families
For John, the Mobile Court provided closure after years of waiting.
"I feel relieved and respected. Justice reached us. It means a lot to families like mine."

For Peter and other children in conflict with the law held on remand, the Mobile Court provided a long-awaited opportunity to be heard and have their cases determined fairly and in accordance with due process.

"The Mobile Court gave me a chance to be heard and to understand the legal process."

For Rebecca, it restored hope and confidence in the justice system.
By reducing barriers such as high costs of accessing justice, limited legal awareness, and low public confidence in the justice system, the Mobile Court strengthened public trust in the rule of law and demonstrated that justice can reach those who need it most.

Women and girls in South Sudan continue to face increasing risks of Gender-Based Violence (GBV) due to conflict, inflation, insecurity, poverty, and harmful gender norms.

Through the Improvement of Community Centers for Responding to Gender-Based Violence (CC4GBV) project, we are constructing and rehabilitating Community Livelihood Centers and Village Markets that serve as safe and inclusive spaces for women and will include day care facilities and playgrounds for their children. These facilities will support women's economic empowerment through business development, access to markets, legal aid, GBV prevention and response services, and livelihood opportunities, thanks to funding from JICA South Sudan

UNDP, in partnership with the Government of South Sudan, African Development Bank Group, and ASIGMA, has commenced a two-day Validation Workshop for the Public Investment Management (PIM) Operational Manual under the theme:
"Strengthening Public Investment Management for Sustainable and Inclusive Development in South Sudan."

The two-day workshop brings together representatives from government institutions, development partners, academia, civil society organizations, and the private sector to review and validate the Manual before its adoption and implementation.

The Manual introduces a comprehensive framework and stage-gate approach to improve project planning, appraisal, implementation, monitoring, and evaluation, helping ensure public investments are strategic, transparent, and deliver value for money.

By strengthening public investment management, South Sudan is taking an important step toward improved economic governance, sustainable development, and better outcomes for its citizens.

Today, UNDP joined the Ministry of Justice and Constitutional Affairs, the National Human Rights Council, the South Sudan Human Rights Commission, United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS), civil society organizations, development partners, and other stakeholders at an inception workshop marking the commencement of the preparation of South Sudan's Third Cycle Universal Periodic Review (UPR) National Report.

The workshop officially launches a nationwide consultative process that will assess progress made in implementing human rights commitments, identify challenges, and inform recommendations to further strengthen the promotion and protection of human rights across the country.

As part of its support, UNDP will facilitate consultations in eight locations across six states and two Administrative Areas: Upper Nile, Northern Bahr el Ghazal, Western Equatoria, Jonglei, Western Bahr el Ghazal, Central Equatoria, Greater Pibor Administrative Area, and Ruweng Administrative Area. These consultations will ensure that the voices of communities, women, youth, persons with disabilities, traditional leaders, civil society, and government institutions contribute to the National Report.

UNDP remains committed to supporting nationally led, inclusive, and participatory processes that advance human rights, the rule of law, and inclusive governance in South Sudan.
