It’s Term 2, and for the past week our girls have been back in classrooms - returning to learning, friendship, and dreams that deserve time to grow.
But for some South Sudanese girls, school and marriage still stand too close together.
Too often, cows brought for bride price are valued before a girl’s education is allowed to take root.
One girl in our program said:
“I am a woman of value. I envision myself as a leader bringing positive social change. Education will make me strong enough to work towards this and build a better South Sudan.”
That is the voice we should be listening to.
Not because our culture has no value, but because our daughters do too.
As we see our girls walking into classrooms hand in hand this term, we are reminded of what this moment really holds. They are not walking toward cattle or decisions made for them - they are walking toward knowledge, choice, and possibility.
The cows may help a family today. But education changes what is possible for generations.
Our girls deserve time: to learn, to apprentice, to lead, and to become - before decisions are made for them.
We believe protecting girls’ education is protecting voice, dignity, confidence, and future.
So we must ask ourselves:
What changes in our communities when a girl’s education is chosen first?
