Who is Dr. Benjamin Baak Deng Bol?

Profile Summary

Dr. Benjamin Baak Deng Bol is a distinguished jurist, legal scholar, and judicial reformer with 45 years of outstanding service in the judiciary of Sudan and South Sudan. In May 2025, he was appointed Chief Justice of the Republic of South Sudan, a role in which he now leads the country’s judiciary with visionary leadership, institutional wisdom, and an unwavering dedication to justice and the rule of law.

Dr Baak is a proud native of the Adoor Malekdit community of Apuuk Giir Thiik, Gogrial East County, Warrap State, Dr. Baak has devoted his life to the pursuit of justice, legal integrity, and national development.

His judicial career, which began in 1979, reflects a steady and exemplary progression through the ranks—from; Judicial Legal Assistant to Justice of the Supreme Court of Sudan, and following independence,He becomes Justice of the Supreme Court of South Sudan. His recent elevation to Chief Justice caps a career marked by legal excellence, constitutional stewardship, and a firm commitment to judicial independence.

Beyond the bench, Dr. Baak is a renowned academic, mentor, and international legal contributor. He holds a PhD in International Environmental Law and an LLM in Intellectual Property Law from Khartoum University and has served as Adjunct Associate Professor at the University of Juba School of Law since 2012.

His expertise has also shaped legal policy and reform through senior roles such as Secretary General of the Sudan Judicial Service Commission, Deputy Director of Judicial Training, and Head of the Translation Unit at the Supreme Court of Sudan. He has represented Sudan and South Sudan in high-level continental and international legal forums.

: The President of South Sudan Bar Association, Arop Malueth Manon, cautioned political leaders that the SSBA is documenting human rights violations especially extrajudicial killings.
He stressed that SSBA will continue striving for accountability for human rights violations as per the R-ARCSS. Arop further called legal professionals to continue defending the vulnerable, challenging impunity and fostering a culture of Dialogue.
