The South Sudan Red Cross (SSRC) and the Ministry of Health on 12 May 2026, signed a Memorandum of Understanding to strengthen blood transfusion services in South Sudan and support efforts to address the country’s shortage of safe blood. The MoU was signed by the SSRC Secretary General, John Lobor, and the Under Secretary of the Ministry of Health, Dr. Oromo Francis Seriano.
Since 2014, the SSRC, with support from the Swiss Red Cross (Schweizerisches Rotes Kreuz), has been working alongside the Ministry of Health and the National Blood Transfusion Service to promote voluntary blood donation through community awareness, behavior change initiatives, and volunteer-led blood drives in Juba, Torit, and Wau.
The Secretary-General, John Lobor, emphasized that blood shortages in hospitals remain a daily emergency, requiring urgent collective action and stronger coordination among partners. He further noted that the blood donor recruitment program aims to support a safe, equitable, and accessible blood supply in South Sudan through strengthened community awareness and voluntary blood donation initiatives.
The partnership will further strengthen awareness campaigns and community engagement to encourage more voluntary blood donors across South Sudan.
