The living conditions in Juba IDP Camp continue to deteriorate due to poor hygiene and sanitation practices. The lack of proper waste management and open defecation pose serious health risks to the vulnerable population.

Recognizing this critical situation, the RCO has taken the initiative to raise awareness among IDPs about the importance of maintaining hygiene and sanitation for their own well-being. This initiative has led to a positive response from the IDPs, who have taken responsibility for general garbage cleaning within the camp.
However, the lack of proper tools and equipment for waste removal presents a significant challenge to their efforts.

The RCO, therefore, urgently calls upon international, national organizations, and UN agencies to take immediate action and provide the necessary support to address the sanitation crisis in Juba IDP Camp. This support should include:

➡️Provision of essential hygiene kits: These kits should include soap, hand sanitizer, disinfectant wipes, and menstrual hygiene products.

➡️Distribution of proper waste disposal tools: This could include shovels, gloves, masks, and wheelbarrows.

➡️Construction and maintenance of sanitation facilities: This includes building and maintaining latrines and handwashing stations with proper water access.

➡️Implementation of hygiene promotion campaigns: These campaigns should educate IDPs about the importance of good hygiene practices and safe waste disposal methods.

The RCO emphasizes that the current situation in Juba IDP Camp is critical and requires immediate intervention to prevent further health risks and outbreaks of disease. By working together, international, national, and local organizations can ensure the health and well-being of the vulnerable population residing in the camp.

The RCO team in Leer County, Unity State, paints a concerning picture of the education landscape in the region. Their recent visit to several schools revealed a multitude of challenges that hinder children's access to quality education:

⏺️Learning under the sun: Many children are forced to learn under trees, lacking proper classrooms and exposure to the elements.

⏺️crumbling infrastructure: Schools are in dire need of rehabilitation, impacting the learning environment and potentially posing safety hazards.

⏺️Hygiene concerns: The absence of latrines in many schools creates poor hygiene and sanitation conditions, jeopardizing children's health and well-being.

⏺️Limited resources: Even schools in relatively good condition lack basic amenities like benches and gender-specific latrines, especially for girls and children with disabilities.

⏺️Teacher shortage: The lack of qualified teachers is a major hurdle, with the few existing ones serving voluntarily without proper incentives.

This situation demands immediate attention and collaborative action. The RCO team is calling upon international, national organizations, and UN agencies to partner in addressing these critical challenges and ensuring equitable access to quality education for all children in Leer and Mayendit counties.
Together, we can make a difference!

Juba IDP Camps: WASH Crisis Demands Immediate Action

The RCO Team has witnessed a critical WASH crisis unfolding in the Juba IDP camp. Overflowing latrines, lack of bathing facilities, and rampant open defecation paint a grim picture of inadequate sanitation and hygiene.

This dire situation is further amplified by a shortage of soap and dignity kits, essential tools for maintaining personal hygiene and preventing the spread of disease. Unsurprisingly, waterborne diseases are on the rise, posing a serious threat to the health and well-being of camp residents.

RCO is calling for immediate action. We urge all relevant stakeholders, including UN agencies, international NGOs, and international donors, to join forces and provide the essential WASH services desperately needed by the vulnerable population of the Juba IDP camps.

This is not a time for delay. Every day without proper WASH puts lives at risk.

Education isn't just a right, it's a shared responsibility - a torch we pass on, illuminating the path to a brighter future. Just as knowledge empowers individuals, it empowers communities and strengthens nations.

That's why we at Rural Child Organization (RCO) stand firmly behind equal education for every child, regardless of their circumstances.

Because on International Day of Education, on January 24th, we celebrate not just access to books and classrooms, but the collective strength that rises when minds are awakened.

"Education is crucial for all children, and girls deserve equal access to quality education."

While some outdated traditions in South Sudan may undervalue girls' education and potential, the truth is that girls are a vital source of strength, intelligence, and progress for families and communities.

Denying girls equal education opportunities is not only unjust, but also a missed opportunity for South Sudan to reach its full potential. Imagine a South Sudan where girls are empowered with knowledge and skills, contributing to the nation's development in every field. This is the future we should strive for.

Here's why investing in girls' education is crucial:

• Empowered girls, stronger families: Educated girls are more likely to be healthy mothers, raise healthy children, and contribute financially to their families.

• Breaking the cycle of poverty: Education equips girls with skills and opportunities to secure better livelihoods for themselves and their families, breaking the cycle of intergenerational poverty.

• Fueling economic growth: An educated female workforce is essential for national development and economic prosperity.

• Promoting peace and stability: Educated girls are more likely to advocate for peace and reconciliation, contributing to a more stable and peaceful society.

Therefore, it's time to move beyond outdated beliefs and embrace the transformative power of girls' education. We must:

• Abolish harmful practices: Stop sending girls to do chores while boys go to school.

• Advocate for equal access to education: Ensure all girls have access to quality education regardless of their background.

• Celebrate girls' achievements: Empower and celebrate girls who pursue education and break down traditional barriers.

By investing in girls' education, we invest in a brighter future for South Sudan, where everyone has the opportunity to thrive.
Remember: Girls are not a "burden" but an invaluable resource. Let's unlock their potential and build a more just and prosperous future for all.

Role of Parents in a Child’s Education

Parents play a pivotal role in a child’s overall development. Parenting is an ever-evolving process that is not just limited to providing the basic, nurturing needs of the child. A good parent also provides a base required for the development of the cognitive and social skills required for success in school and beyond.

The first step is to understand that the responsibility of educating the child doesn’t just lie with their school. A kid’s education starts at home and parents are their first teachers. Parents play a crucial role in shaping a child’s personality, character, habits, emotional development etc. In fact, research has shown that the best predictor of a student’s success is the degree of involvement of parents in a child’s education.

It is necessary for parents to be involved in the right manner in the education process for the proper academic and social development of the child. A parent who is abreast with what their child is studying at school would be more aware of their strengths and weaknesses, their areas of interest, and would be able to better connect the child’s learnings to real-world situations.

Three main areas where parents can rather should, contribute are:

1. Being a role model for children to follow
It is the role of a parent to teach children discipline, responsibility, and accountability by setting limits, establishing consequences and also teaching values. But children are more likely to follow what an adult does than what they preach - they pick up each and every mannerism of their parents and rapidly imbibe it.
How parents interact with them and others form the basis for their social quotient. Similarly, the parents’ active involvement and responsiveness towards them forms their emotional and mental quotient.
Hence, it is key for parents to try embodying the person they want their child to be.

2. Helping the child in schoolwork
Every kid’s level of understanding is different. According to the child’s needs, parents can assist their little ones by revising with them what they’ve learnt at school, guiding them on how to do their home assignments and projects (and not do it for them), helping them maintain a healthy balance of studies and play, and rewarding their progress.
3. Creating a conducive learning environment at home

“Encourage and support your kids because they to live up to what you believe of them”
One of the biggest gifts a parent can give their children is of their support and acceptance. Being positive, emotionally present, and reassuring when they fail can go a long way. An environment of love and openness that allows children to fail and learn can play a massive role in helping them inculcate curiosity and ensure their right development
