Impact Report on BCYF Mental Health Session
The BCYF mental health session conducted on Sunday 16/11/2025 in Hope Pentecostal Church was nothing sort of a powerful reminder of how deeply our youth long for spaces of honesty, healing, and authentic connection. What began as an open conversation grew into a moment of courage, vulnerability, and shared humanity. Many young people spoke about the emotional battles they have been carrying alone and for the first time, felt truly seen and heard.
A major highlight was the contribution of our panelists, Bishop Richard Okello and Cecilia Kaiwa, who opened up with remarkable honesty and clarity. They shared their own experiences with mental health struggles, the fears, the uncertainties, the healing journey, and how God walked with them through it all. Their transparency broke down walls and reminded everyone that even spiritual leaders face emotional battles, and overcoming them requires faith, support, and courage.
Several key issues were raised by the youth. Many spoke about the struggle to find healthy coping and healing mechanisms when life becomes overwhelming. Others expressed a deep fear of opening up, worried they might be judged or misunderstood. A major concern was the challenge of finding the right counselor, someone trustworthy and knowledgeable. Painfully, some youths shared experiences where confidential information shared with pastors or counselors was later revealed in public settings. This has created fear, distrust, and a reluctance to seek help.
Despite these challenges, hope rose in the room. Youth felt understood. Walls came down. Tears and testimonies created a powerful sense of unity. We left with a renewed commitment to making our churches safe spaces, places of grace, confidentiality, empathy, and healing. Sunday reminded us that mental wellness is not separate from our faith journey; it is part of the wholeness God desires for every one of us.
