World Humanitarian Day 2026 | Protecting Those Who Serve

Today, Active Women Arise Africa (AWA Africa) joins the world in honoring humanitarian workers across South Sudan and beyond — people who continue to show up for communities in some of the hardest places to work.

In South Sudan, these workers are rarely just "aid providers." They listen. They walk alongside communities through crisis. They protect women and children, uphold dignity, and hold onto hope even when everything around them makes that difficult.

But every humanitarian worker is also a person first, with a family, a community, and a life beyond the work they do for others.

They deserve to be safe while keeping others safe.

AWA Africa honors the courage, commitment, and sacrifice of humanitarian workers everywhere, and we're calling for stronger action to protect their safety, security, and dignity.

On this World Humanitarian Day, we're holding onto a vision of a future where humanitarian workers can reach the people who need them without fear, where their work is respected, and where helping others never costs someone their life.

To every humanitarian worker serving across South Sudan: we see you, we value you, and we thank you.

Happy World Humanitarian Day. 🤝🏾

On 14 August, 2026, Active Women Arise Africa (AWA-Africa), in partnership with UNDP South Sudan, officially launched a project on Community Violence Reduction in partnerships with white Nile and Sobat communities to advance socioeconomic cohesion and peaceful uses of the Nile resources, Renk County! 🇸🇸

Held at the ACRA Meeting Hall, our inception meeting brought together 20 key local leaders and stakeholders from across the region—including representatives from the Relief & Rehabilitation Commission, Directors of Gender and Youth, the Youth Union, advocates for Persons with Disabilities, traditional chiefs, religious leaders, women leaders, peace committee members, and humanitarian partners. 🤝

The session opened with inspiring remarks from Mr. Thik Benjamin, Director of Humanitarian Affairs, setting the stage for a collaborative working conversation. Together, we discussed the everyday safety and development priorities of the White Nile and Sobat communities.

💡 Key Takeaway: Lasting peace and stability aren't built alone—they grow through strong, continuous cooperation between local peace structures, government offices, and dedicated partners.

We are deeply grateful to UNDP South Sudanand for their continued trust and investment, and to all the community leaders who showed up with enthusiasm, candid insights, and a shared commitment to building safer, more resilient communities across Renk County. 💙

On July 24, 2026, Active Women Arise Africa (AWA-Africa) proudly concluded a capacity-building training for 50 participants, including survivors of conflict-related sexual violence (CRSV), vulnerable women, and women living with disabilities. The training was successfully graced by Hon. Rose Nyaboth, the state minister of Gender Child and Social Welfare.

This comprehensive program focused on:
Financial literacy for small business management
Legal awareness and rights education
GBV prevention, protection, and response referral pathways.

The training successfully equipped these women with the practical skills needed to achieve economic resilience, including how to effectively manage and generate income from their newly provided fishing canoes.

We extend our sincere gratitude to UNDP South Sudan for their vital partnership and support in making this initiative a reality. Together, we are building pathways to recovery, independence, and long-term resilience.

Attending AidEx - The Global Humanitarian Aid Community organized by AidEx - The Global Humanitarian Aid Community and Al-Khair Foundation this week was a powerful reminder of where the development sector stands, and the urgent direction it needs to take.
The central theme, "Beyond Delivering More with Less," focused on scaling innovative solutions, changing partnership approaches, and restructuring financing models. We spent two days diving deep into discussions surrounding grassroots localization, locally led pooled funds, and moving past transactional donor relationships toward real, equitable collaboration.
If we are being completely honest, these topics are very familiar. We have all heard them before in countless panel sessions. Yet, what made this week refreshing was the opportunity to interact with partners who are moving past the rhetoric and actually pushing to implement these solutions on the ground.
Representing South Sudan, it is clear to us at Active Women Arise Africa (AWA-Africa) that shifting these paradigms isn't just an industry debate—it is a daily necessity. True localization means ensuring that local, women-led organizations are not just passive recipients of aid, but are trusted with the flexible resources and decision-making power to drive sustainable peace, protection, and development in our communities.
There is immense power in bringing the right people together to actively tackle these challenges, and it was wonderful connecting with so many colleagues, allies, and new faces. We return home more determined than ever to champion the localization agenda and amplify the voices of grassroots women.

📢 AWA-Africa is on the ground for ! 🇸🇸

We’ve joined our partners to mark the International Day for Mine Awareness under the vital theme: "Invest in Peace." 🕊️

For AWA-Africa, investing in peace means clearing the path for women, farmers, and children to move without fear. We are calling for increased support for national NGOs to lead the charge in making South Sudan mine-free.
