South Sudan Athletics Gains Momentum as Two Sprinters Qualify for Continental Championship

JUBA, South Sudan — South Sudan’s athletics sector continues to show strong progress after two athletes qualified for the upcoming African Seniors Athletics Championship in Accra, Ghana, scheduled for May 12–15, 2026. Olympian Lucia William posted an impressive time of 11.88 seconds, while Thiep Deng Malek set a new national record of 10.40 seconds, marking a major achievement for the country’s track and field.

Their qualification reflects the growing strength and determination of South Sudanese athletes on the regional stage. As they prepare to compete at the continental level, the two runners carry national pride and high expectations, with hopes of raising the country’s profile in African athletics and inspiring more young talents to join the sport.
