PICTORIAL: ESCAPING TO SAFETY 🇸🇸 ➡️ 🇪🇹
Akobo County, Jonglei State – Monday, March 9, 2026
The banks of the Akobo River have turned into a scene of a deepening humanitarian crisis. Thousands of vulnerable civilians mostly women and children are crossing into Ethiopia in search of safety after a 72-hour evacuation order issued by the SSPDF ahead of possible military operations.
Residents of Akobo Town, together with internally displaced persons (IDPs) from Uror and Nyirol counties, are fleeing in large numbers, leaving behind their homes and belongings.
Eyewitnesses describe the situation as “extremely critical and heartbreaking,” as desperate families continue to cross the river with uncertainty about where they will find shelter or protection.
The growing movement of people highlights the urgent need for humanitarian support for those affected by the crisis.
