South Sudan to hold general elections on 26 December 2026, says NEC chair after meeting Kiir

South Sudan will hold its long-delayed general elections on December 26, 2026, the chairperson of the National Election Commission (NEC), Prof. Abednego Akok Kachuol, confirmed on Thursday after briefing President Salva Kiir Mayardit at State House.

In a statement issued by the Office of the President, both Kiir and Prof. Akok reiterated that the elections will be conducted as previously agreed by the parties to the peace deal.

Addressing reporters after the meeting, Prof. Akok said the president had directed the Ministry of Finance to release funds to support electoral activities and instructed the country’s security agencies to assist the NEC in creating a safe and transparent environment for the vote.

The NEC currently has fully operational offices in six states, with construction underway in the remaining four. These offices will serve as hubs for voter registration and coordination ahead of the polls.

The elections, first expected in 2015, have been repeatedly postponed due to conflict and delays in the implementation of the revitalised peace agreement. If held as planned, the vote will be South Sudan’s first since gaining independence in 2011.
