Healing required survivors to be met with safety, dignity, and compassionate support.

In conflict-affected communities across South Sudan, survivors of gender-based violence often face unimaginable trauma, isolation, and barriers to accessing lifesaving care.

For many women and girls, accessing a safe space is the first step toward reclaiming hope.

Recently, in Leer County, Unity State, a survivor of sexual violence, whom we will call “Jane” to protect her identity, arrived at our Women and Girls Friendly centre after surviving a traumatic sexual assault.

At the centre, Jane immediately received support through a survivor-centred case management process led by a trained GBV caseworker.

She was also provided with emergency cash assistance to help her access urgent healthcare services.

Further, she was enrolled in ongoing psychosocial support sessions, where she will continue participating in group healing activities designed to help survivors cope with trauma, rebuild confidence, and regain emotional stability.

Jane’s story reflects the broader reality faced by many women and girls living in humanitarian and emergency settings.

It also highlights the critical importance of accessible and integrated protection services during times of crisis.

Her recovery journey underscores several key priorities for protection actors in emergency settings:

➡️ Safe spaces save lives by providing survivors with confidential, compassionate, and immediate support.

➡️ Timely access to healthcare and psychosocial support is essential for recovery and long-term well-being.

➡️ Cash assistance can remove urgent barriers that prevent survivors from seeking medical attention and protection services.

➡️ Survivor-centred approaches restore dignity by ensuring survivors make informed choices about their own recovery journey.

This integrated GBV response is part of the emergency response program we are implementing in Leer, Mayendit, and Fangak Counties in South Sudan, with funding from the South Sudan Humanitarian Fund

Empowering women and girls' goes beyond protection, it is also about restoring dignity confidence and economic independence.

We successfully conducted VSLA training for GBV survivors. The session focused on building trust, strengthening teamwork and enhancing collaboration within the groups. Participants were also introduced to digital VSLA approaches and their benefits including improved record keeping, transparency and easier financial management.

The training remained highly interactive and participatory with women and girls actively engaging throughout the sessions. Participants later formed two VSLA groups where leaders were democratically selected by members promoting ownership, accountability and collective leadership.

Initiatives like these continue to create safe spaces for healing, resilience and economic empowerment for survivors and vulnerable women in our communities.

Meaningful conversations are the heart of community transformation.

Recently, we conducted Focused Group Discussion (FGD) with girls and women in Leer, creating a safe workspace to openly share experiences, challenges and aspirations.

Key topics included.

↪️Safety and security within communities.
↪️Access to Education
↪️Menstrual hygiene
↪️Prevention to forced and early marriage
↪️PSEA
↪️Domestic Violence
↪️Child Protection concerns
↪️Household decision-making
↪️Housing, Land and Property (HLP)

These conversations are more than conversations-they are a pathway to understanding community realities and strengthening inclusive, responsive programming. Listening to women and girls ensures that interventions are grounded in their lived experiences and priorities.

Access to Education for ALL...

In Lekuangole, Pibor State, , alongside our partners Oxfam and World Food Programme (WFP), brought together parents, teachers, and community leaders for a PTA & SMC training.

Together, we are strengthening school leadership, supporting teachers, and creating better learning environments for children.

The PTA/SMC was a powerful reminder that improving education is a shared responsibility.

↪️We reflected on the key issues affecting learners-from attendance and discipline to the need for more learning materials and better support for teachers. one thing stood out clearly; when parents, teachers and the community work together, real change is possible.

↪️Despite the challenges, there is a strong commitment from stakeholders to take action-improving attendance, strengthening communication and creating a more supportive learning environment for every child.

↪️We also discussed how many learners struggle to connect classroom knowledge to real-life situations, highlighting the need for more practical and engaging teaching approaches.

↪️Education goes beyond the classroom-it starts at home and grows through community effort. Together, we can make it meaningful and impactful.
