Yesterday, we hosted the 2nd Science, Women & Leadership Symposium 2026, bringing together women in person in Juba and online for an afternoon of learning, connection, reflection and practical conversations about women's leadership and career success.

Under the theme “Beyond Challenges: Practical Strategies and Opportunities for Women’s Leadership and Career Success,” we set out to move beyond conversations about the barriers women face and ask a different question:

What practical strategies, opportunities, knowledge and connections can help women move forward?

What does a leadership opportunity look like once you step into it?

Earlier this year, Dr. Ayan Ajuoi Magot, Executive Director of SSWIM and a current WomenLift Health fellow, joined fellow South Sudanese women part of this year's WomenLift Health cohort, Dr. Lucy Theophilus, Ms. Aja Kuol, Ms. Florence Alibeb and Ms. Manuela Modong in Nairobi, Kenya, for the WomenLift Health Lift-Off Immersion.

Together, they began an experience that she describes as much more than conventional leadership training.Reflecting on the immersion, Dr. Ayan shares:

“The Lift-Off Immersion was truly a once-in-a-lifetime experience. It gave us our first opportunity to connect in person with the WomenLift Health team and our fellow cohort members.”

Over the three days, participants were challenged to reflect deeply on their leadership identities, understand how they lead and influence others, and explore what it means to lead with impact and embrace collective leadership.

For Dr. Ayan, one of the most valuable parts of the experience was reviewing her leadership assessment and gaining insight into how others perceive her leadership.
“Guided by our facilitators, I was able to identify my core strengths as well as key areas for growth as I continue to develop as a leader.”

💡 And this is precisely why opportunities matter. They create spaces to learn, reflect, build networks, strengthen leadership skills—and sometimes see possibilities for ourselves that we had not previously considered.
