BREAKING: Parliament Passes Amendments to National Elections Act, Paving Way for December Polls
JUBA :- The Transitional National Legislative Assembly (TNLA) has passed the proposed amendments to the National Elections Act, 2012, advancing the legal framework for the country’s planned general elections in December 2026.
The amendments were introduced in Parliament by Justice and Constitutional Affairs Minister Dr. Wek Mamer Kuol to address inconsistencies in the existing electoral law and align it with the amended Transitional Constitution.
The parliamentary approval comes as South Sudan prepares for elections scheduled for 22 December 2026, following earlier constitutional amendments that removed key legal requirements previously linked to the electoral process.
With Parliament having completed its consideration of the Elections Act amendments, the bill is expected to be submitted to President Salva Kiir Mayardit for assent. It will become law following presidential signing.
The passage marks another major legislative step in preparations for the December elections, although political parties and opposition groups have raised concerns over aspects of the amendment process.
