Lecturers at public universities have decided to continue staying away from work until their 11 months of arrears are paid, despite receiving one month’s salary.

Staff at the Universities of Upper Nile, Rumbek, and Bahr el-Ghazal laid down their tools several weeks ago, demanding payment and other benefits.

The chairperson of the high-level committee of the five public universities, Adam Thabo acknowledged the payment of the one-month salary but says it is not enough to convince them to return to lecture rooms.

The Chairperson of the Staff Association in Bahr El-Ghazal, Joseph Lual Dario, is demanding that all arrears be cleared.

"We have tried our level best to be patient with the government and it is unable," said Dario, "Eleven months, what are you doing? The plan is not there. The policy is not there."

Last week, the Minister of Finance and Planning committed to paying the salaries of civil servants but did not specify how many months' arrears would be paid.
