Happy International Women’s Day!

Across CARE globally and here at CARE South Sudan, women remain at the very heart of our mission. Every day, women lead change, inspire progress, and help build stronger, more resilient communities.

Did you know? At our Juba Country Office, six of our departments are led by women, and another remarkable woman leads one of our field offices. That’s leadership in action.

This International Women’s Day, it’s not enough to simply talk about supporting women’s leadership. Real support means ensuring women are empowered to earn, trade, and make decisions. When women have opportunities to generate their own income, they gain confidence, independence, and the power to shape their futures.

This is the spirit of this year’s call to “Give to Gain” when we invest in women and girls, we all gain stronger families, thriving communities, and a more hopeful future.

At the same time, we must speak out and call for an end to the escalating cases of Gender-Based Violence (GBV) across South Sudan. Women and girls deserve safety, dignity, and respect in their homes, communities, and across the country.

And honestly, we couldn’t say it better than some of your favorite South Sudanese influencers, who are lending their voices to this important message.

To everyone watching or reading this: comment below and tag a woman who has made a difference in your career or life — someone who inspired you, supported you, or helped shape your journey. Let’s make them feel recognized, proud, valued, and appreciated today.

Because when we give women opportunities, support, and respect, we all gain.

On 2nd October 2025, CARE International South Sudan hosted the official Close-out Meeting of the Strengthening Women’s Rights Movement on the Women, Peace and Security Agenda (SWoMO) Project in Juba.

The event united Women-Led Organizations, civil society partners, government representatives, and international allies to reflect on achievements, challenges, and lessons learned. Highlights included moving testimonies from women leaders, powerful presentations by partners, Women’s Empowerment Centre South Sudan (WECSS), Women Agency for Progess Organization (WAPO), and Young Women Christian Association (YWCA), and remarks from dignitaries from the Canadian embassy, Women Parliamentary Caucuses from Eastern Equatoria and Jonglei, and the transitional National Legislative Assembly.

Over the past 3.5 years, SWoMO has:
✔Addres Strengthened the institutional capacity of Women’s Rights Organizations.
✔Amplified the voices of women and girls often excluded from decision-making.
✔Fostered stronger networks to advance gender equality and peace.

What began as a project is now a movement - one that continues to inspire collective action for justice, dignity, and lasting change in South Sudan and beyond.

Huge thanks to our partners and to the German Cooperation (BMZ) for making this journey possible.

Strengthening Public Health Systems: South Sudan Validates National NTD Monitoring & Evaluation Framework

On September 23rd, 2025, the Ministry of Health, with support from CARE International and key partners, hosted a Validation Workshop at Palm Africa Hotel, Juba, to finalise South Sudan’s Monitoring & Evaluation Framework for Neglected Tropical Diseases (NTDs).

Facilitated through the Clinton Health Access Initiative (CHAI) project, the session underscored the country’s drive toward data-driven, evidence-based health planning that delivers equitable care for everyone.

The workshop brought together 60+ stakeholders – government officials, technical partners, civil society, and international agencies – to align on indicators, tools, and reporting systems for combating NTDs such as Onchocerciasis, Lymphatic Filariasis, Schistosomiasis, and Trachoma.

The validated framework, owned by the Ministry of Health and developed with technical facilitation from CARE and CHAI, aligns with the WHO NTD Roadmap (2021–2030) and South Sudan’s NTD Master Plan (2023–2027). It will serve as a foundation for accountability, resource mobilization, and improved health outcomes – reflecting CARE’s broader goal of building sustainable health systems that save lives and empower communities.

In today’s world, humanitarian crises are increasing in both complexity and frequency. This makes the ability to respond swiftly, collaboratively, and with strong local leadership more critical than ever in South Sudan and beyond, where resilience meets response.

From September 22–24, the CARE Humanitarian Affairs Team from the US, together with CARE South Sudan, convened a 3-day workshop in Juba with 15 partner organizations to strengthen crisis preparedness, supply chain systems, and emergency response.

This initiative reflects CARE’s commitment to a networked approach, where local partners, governments, and civil society are at the forefront of humanitarian action. Through the Humanitarian Partnership Platform (HPP), we bring together more than 30 local and national organizations - including women-led groups - to build capacity, foster learning, and promote locally led solutions that put people first in times of crisis.

Together with our partners, we are reshaping humanitarian aid to be faster, more inclusive, and centered on the needs of the most vulnerable - especially women, girls, and children.💛

Farming for a Better Future in South Sudan

In April 2025, our AMVAT Project came to a close - but its impact is still being felt today. 💚 A recent study report by the Pulte Institute for Global Development, University of Notre Dame shows farmers were highly satisfied with:
✔ Training in crop growing & group savings (VSLA)
✔ Quality groundnut seeds that boosted harvests
✔ Strong market links to sell more & earn better
✔ Big potential for expanding commercial farming

Despite the challenges posed by insecurity, the AMVAT project effectively transferred knowledge and fostered enthusiasm for commercial agriculture. Moving forward, realistic expectations for growth and market capacity will be essential. The project’s success also relied heavily on over a decade of peacebuilding and reconciliation initiatives that laid the foundation for the rapid establishment, growth, and training of cooperatives.

The project was funded by African Development Bank Group (AfDB) through a grant to the Government of South Sudan and implemented by Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) in collaboration with CARE International.

🙏 Huge thanks to USAID/BHA for funding the study and to the Pulte Institute for Global Development, University of Notre Dame for the insightful evaluation.

Today in Juba, CARE SS joins our consortium partners to celebrate South Sudan Joint Response (SSJR) – A Decade of Excellence:

10 Years of Partnerships, Innovation, and Success for lifesaving support.

Since 2017, CARE has been a proud SSJR partner, working with communities in Rubkona, GPAA and beyond to save lives, reduce suffering, and protect the rights of those most at risk - especially women and people with disabilities.

With generous support from the Government of the Netherlands through Dutch Relief Alliance and CARE Nederland, this milestone marks a powerful journey of resilience, collaboration, and hope. Together, we honor 10 years of impact - and look ahead to a stronger, more inclusive future for the people of South Sudan.

“There’s nothing more comforting than sleeping in Mom’s arms.”

Across CARE-supported clinics in Mayom, Abiemnom, Unity State - and beyond - mothers bring their young ones to access the nutrition support they need to heal and grow healthy.

Supported by UNICEF and WFP, CARE’s health and nutrition programmes are a lifeline for families in South Sudan, where 2.3 million children face the risk of acute malnutrition.

In Pariang, Ruweng Administrative Area, South Sudan, Ayom Deng is transforming thread into opportunity.
Through tailoring training at a women's center (WGFS) supported by CARE and Coalition for Humanity, Ayom’s weekly income soared from 5,000 to 40,000 SSP. Her first investment? Her daughter’s education.
“When she wore her school uniform for the first time, she was so happy,” Ayom smiles.
Empowered with skills and support, women like Ayom are not just making clothes - they’re weaving brighter futures for their families.

Thanks to Germany’s Relief Coalition (ADH) and our local partners, like Coalition for Humanity.
At CARE, we believe in small but powerful, women-led local solutions that help build strong and resilient communities by putting women at the front and center of our work - because when women rise, communities thrive.

“If my daughter goes to school, she can help rebuild our country.” says Abarai, 39, mother and a patient

After fleeing her home in Kongor in Lekuangole county three years ago, Abarai found new hope through CARE South Sudan’s mobile health clinic in Akilo, Greater Pibor Administrative Area (GPAA) under the South Sudan Humanitarian Fund (SSHF) project.

At a clinic set in purposed tent in Akilo, she and her baby daughter receive medical care, learn healthy practices, and dream of a brighter future.

With funding from SSHF of the UNOCHA, CARE is delivering critical health services in its two mobile health clinics in Lekuangole and Pibor counties that treat common sicknesses: malaria, typhoid, diarrhoea, and other infections while providing vaccines for young children, care for pregnant women.

Together with the community, we’re helping families stay strong and healthy - now and in the future. 🧡
