Scarface, one of Africa’s most famous wild lions and arguably the most recognizable lion ever documented in the wild.
He was a dominant male of the Marsh Pride in Kenya’s Maasai Mara and became famous for the distinctive scar over his right eye, received during a territorial battle with another lion in 2012.
Many of the numbers often shared online, such as killing 400 hyenas, 130 male lions, or being the only lion to kill a fully grown hippopotamus alone, are difficult to verify and are not supported by scientific records.
What is certain is that Scarface survived numerous territorial wars, injuries, and challenges from younger rivals. In the wild, male lions rarely live beyond their early teens due to constant fighting and competition. Scarface lived to around 14 years old, an impressive age for a wild male lion.
By his final years, he was thin, weakened, and largely solitary. Yet tourists and wildlife enthusiasts traveled from around the world hoping to see him.
When he died in 2021, tributes poured in globally, cementing his status as one of the most iconic lions ever observed in the African wilderness.
