To address the issues that challenge one's Mental Health, we were last week, honored to engage with teenage students of Global Academy secondary school in Juba, to discuss the academic challenges brought about by the COVID 19 pandemic and find way forward to address them even during the post COVID 19 period.
The students expressed a number of challenges caused by the partial closure of schools which included, forced and early marriages, domestic violence, peer pressure to join bad groups and high costs of living since some of their parents lost their jobs because of the pandemic.

"I was supposed to be in S3 but I am still in S2 because of the coronavirus. It has disturbed my mind so much . " One student said.
" Many of my friends got married and others started to smoke sh**ha and drink alcohol. Now many of our friends are saying I should get married and be like them. It disturbs me alot because I still want to study." another student explained.

Our lead advocate, Ms. Juan Evalyn Mule, asked the students to focus on their studies even amidst the challenges because that is what will make them citizens of positive impact. She further asked them to look out for their friends who miss school and be kind to others without judging them to avoid suicidal thoughts.
"Su***de is on the rise among teenagers like you so I am asking you to check on them and be kind so you don't push them to commit su***de. Whatever the challenges, please do not think of committing su***de, seek for help. We are here to help you." She advised them.

She later gave them an assignment to express anything on mental health in form a poems or short stories and submit to us.

The network sincerely appreciates the Young Positives South Sudan for always partnering with us to champion mental health awareness in the country. We reiterate our commitment to advocating for mental health and working with organizations and institutions to create awareness on mental health.

Last week, as the nation prepared to celebrate the 11th anniversary of the national independence, we had a radio talk on the breakfast show about mental health and how best we could protect our mental health while we prepared to celebrate the big day.

Our lead advocate, Ms. Juan Evalyn Mule elaborated on the possible factors that affect our mental health and how best we can cope and lessen the chances of falling into critical mental health disorders.
"There is need for us to be mindful of our mental health as we celebrate the independence day. So, let's take upon ourselves to enjoy responsibly, be kind to others and also remember to be each other's keeper." She emphasized.

As South Sudan starts another year as a nation, we ask everyone to become an ambassador of mental health as we strive to see that we eliminate mental health related issues such as suicidal deaths." She urged the public.

The breakfast show was hosted by Moses Yasin at Capital Fm 89.0 Juba . We appreciate the management for prioritizing Mental Health and partnering with us and urge other institutions/organisations to incorporate mental health into their programs/projects.
