On Monday the 3rd of August 2026, CIRDA-SS team visited H.E the Governor Charles Madut Akol. It was one of the fruitful discussions we had with our Governor.

We shared some highlights on what CIRDA does in NBeG State. The team invited the governor to witness the handover of one of the biggest Solar- powered Water Yard being constructed by CIRDA-SS with funding from UNMISS.

The governor appreciated the team and the work CIRDA is doing in NBeG State, particularly the projects CIRDA is implementing such as FSL, SGBV, CCMP, and other humanitarian assistance CIRDA and the Diocese do especially Food Assistance to returnees, Sudanese etc.

During this meeting, our Executive Director Bishop Joseph Mamer appreciated the governor for some of the achievements he has done since he became governor, for example, the renovations of Majok Yith-thiou road, Aweil rice scheme, the issue of children who was illegally taken to Juba and the governor and other leaders intervened by returning back children.

Besides these, Bishop also raised a concern over the issue of Aweil University, Bishop said that we need to raise funds to improve infrastructure in the University because our children suffer whenever they travel to other States in pursuing for their education.

Bishop also mentioned that most of our young girls and boys are stranded here in Aweil because they can not afford to pay for accommodation, food and transportation even if one was able to pay school fee, and many other cost involved.

🌽 At just 21 years old, Apol Chol spends her days caring for her two young children and working to put food on the table.

Apol lives in the Aweil East region of South Sudan, where many families face daily uncertainty about their next meal.

Like millions of people across the country, Apol worried about how to feed her children.

⛈️ Seasons of flooding and drought make it hard for families to grow enough food.

For mothers like Apol, every day brings difficult choices about how to stretch resources to care for their families.

But this year alone, 500 families like Apol’s received training to start their own kitchen gardens.

🌱 Aweil’s kitchen gardeners learn to grow fruits and vegetables in dry climates, reducing hunger and nutritional deficiencies by diversifying their diets.

Today, Apol’s grows nutrient dense vegetables like kale, okra, and other leafy greens for her family.

Many women trained in kitchen gardening also grow surplus produce to sell at local markets!

💰This extra income helps families buy essentials, care for their children, and face the future with confidence.

Last month alone, Apol earned enough selling her produce to sustain her family for days.

🌳 What began as a small kitchen garden is now helping Apol nourish her children, earn an income, and build a more hopeful future for her family.
