International Literacy Day 2026

At YEEP Somalia, we believe literacy is about more than just reading and writing. It gives young people the knowledge and confidence to participate, speak up, make informed decisions, and contribute to their communities.

Through the Youth, Peace and Security (YPS) agenda, literacy can help young people challenge harmful narratives, promote peace, and become active citizens and peacebuilders.

Today, we celebrate the power of literacy and its role in creating a generation of informed, empowered, and peaceful young people.

When we invest in literacy, we invest in young people and in a more peaceful future.

Youth voices matter in shaping conversations on peace, security, and protection.

From 25–27 August 2026, YEEP Somalia participated in the Learning Event on Supporting Community-Responsive Peacekeeping in South Sudan and Somalia, hosted by Save the Children in Naivasha, Kenya.

YEEP Somalia was represented by Salma Mohyadin, who actively participated in discussions on Children and Armed Conflict (CAAC) and Youth, Peace and Security (YPS), bringing youth perspectives into conversations on peacebuilding, child protection, prevention, and community resilience.

The discussions provided an important space to reflect on how communities can strengthen prevention efforts, reduce the risks of the recruitment and use of children and young people, and create meaningful opportunities for youth to contribute to peace and security.

The event also brought together government representatives, practitioners, community actors, and youth leaders to share experiences, learn from one another, and explore more community-responsive approaches to peacebuilding and protection.

At YEEP Somalia, we believe young people should not only be part of conversations about peace and security—they should have a meaningful role in shaping them. We remain committed to supporting young people as partners and leaders in peacebuilding, prevention, child protection, and community resilience. 🌱

Today, YEEP Somalia participated in the Gen Z Impact for the Future dialogue, joining young people from across Africa to explore how the Pact for the Future can be translated from global commitments into meaningful action at country and community levels.

For Somalia, advancing the Pact means strengthening meaningful youth participation, youth leadership, peacebuilding, innovation, and locally driven solutions for a more peaceful, inclusive, and sustainable future.

We sincerely appreciate UNDP Africa and UNDCO Africa for convening this important space and creating opportunities for young people to exchange perspectives, strengthen connections, and contribute to shaping the future.

YEEP Somalia was proud to participate in today’s National Youth Day Commemoration, organized by the Ministry of Youth and Sports Somalia in partnership with UNFPA Somalia.

Guided by this year’s theme, “Different Contexts, Common Aspirations,” the commemoration provided an important space to recognize the diversity of experiences, challenges, and opportunities facing young people, while also highlighting the common aspirations that connect youth across communities and contexts.

YEEP Somalia was honored to moderate the panel discussion on this year’s theme, bringing together different perspectives on how young people can contribute meaningfully to Somalia’s development, peace, and future. The discussion reinforced the importance of creating spaces where young people are not only heard, but also trusted as partners and supported to take leadership in shaping solutions that respond to their communities.

For YEEP Somalia, meaningful youth participation goes beyond representation. It means ensuring that young people have opportunities to influence decisions, contribute to policy and programmes, and lead locally driven solutions for peace, resilience, and sustainable development.

We sincerely appreciate the Ministry of Youth and Sports Somalia and UNFPA Somalia for bringing together young leaders, government representatives, partners, and other stakeholders to celebrate the contributions of Somali youth and strengthen collective efforts toward a more inclusive future.

YEEP Somalia was proud to be part of the Global Strategic Dialogue on Youth, Peace and Security: From Normative Progress to Implementation Impact, held from 28–30 July 2026 in Almaty, Kazakhstan.

Our organization was represented by Abdishakur Moalim Shiimaay, known as Shiimaay Yare Vice Executive Director, who joined youth leaders, policymakers, UN representatives, civil society organizations, and development partners from across the globe to discuss practical ways of advancing the Youth, Peace and Security (YPS) agenda.

During the dialogue, Abdishakur shared Somalia's ongoing efforts to develop its first Youth, Peace and Security National Action Plan (YPS NAP)—an important milestone in creating more opportunities for meaningful youth participation in peacebuilding and national development. He also emphasized the need to establish an inclusive national YPS coalition that can bring together youth-led organizations, government institutions, civil society, and development partners to strengthen collaboration and collective action.

The discussions offered valuable insights from countries that have made significant progress in implementing the YPS agenda. Learning from their experiences reinforced the importance of partnership, coordination, and youth leadership in building peaceful and resilient societies.

As YEEP Somalia, we return home inspired, better connected, and more committed than ever to supporting the localization and implementation of the YPS agenda in Somalia. We believe that young people are not only beneficiaries of peace—they are essential partners and leaders in creating it.

We sincerely thank UNFPA for bringing together such a diverse group of participants and creating this important platform for dialogue and collaboration. We also extend our appreciation to the Government of Kazakhstan, the facilitators, speakers, organizers, and everyone who contributed to the success of this global dialogue.

The conversations may have ended in Almaty, but the work continues. Together, we can turn commitments into action and ensure that young people remain at the center of peacebuilding and sustainable development.

Yesterday, YEEP Somalia was honored to participate in the MHPSS and Peacebuilding Dialogue organized by Brain Story Organization (BSO). The dialogue brought together practitioners, community representatives, and peacebuilding actors to exchange ideas on strengthening peace through Mental Health and Psychosocial Support (MHPSS) and community-based approaches.

As part of the discussion, YEEP Somalia shared its experiences in implementing Preventing and Countering Violent Extremism (PCVE) initiatives, reflecting on the importance of youth engagement, community participation, and psychosocial support in building resilient and peaceful communities. We emphasized that sustainable peace can only be achieved when young people are empowered to lead positive change and when the well-being of individuals and communities is placed at the center of peacebuilding efforts.

The dialogue provided an excellent opportunity to learn from one another, exchange practical experiences, and strengthen collaboration among organizations working toward a peaceful and resilient Somalia.

We sincerely thank Brain Story Organisation (BSO) for organizing this timely and impactful dialogue and for creating a platform that fosters meaningful conversations, shared learning, and collective action. We also appreciate all participants for their valuable contributions and commitment to advancing peace and social cohesion.
