For many women and children in district, access to healthcare comes at a considerable cost and inconvenience. Not anymore.

“I used to travel a long distance to Jowhar town for medical services. These services are now closer to us, all for free. We’ve been relieved since Wardi Relief and Development Initiatives' came here,” said Khadija Osman Ahmed, a patient at our new Primary Health Unit (PHU) in Bula Waray village.

Through our , with support from the Somalia Humanitarian Fund and UNICEF Somalia, Wardi Relief and Development Initiatives' has constructed and equipped three PHUs in the district, improving access to quality and free healthcare.

For a mother, discovering that her child is malnourished can be frightening. But early identification can also be the beginning of recovery.

At Wardi Relief and Development Initiatives' Primary Health Units (PHUs) and outreach points in district, children are screened for malnutrition using simple tools such as MUAC measurements, allowing health workers to identify children who need nutritional support.

“My child was sick and weak this morning. I brought him here. He was weighed and measured,” continued Fadumo Abukar Siidow, a mother in Baaroweyne village. “The doctors informed me he is malnourished. I have been given 18 pieces of Therapeutic Food. I am hoping he will get better.”

Children identified with severe acute malnutrition are then enrolled for treatment and provided with Ready-to-Use Therapeutic Food (RUTF), commonly known as PlumpyNut, alongside follow-up and monitoring.

Armed with visual guides and deep community trust, Wardi Relief and Development Initiatives' Infant and Young Child Feeding (IYCF) nurses are leading vital IYCF sessions directly inside remote villages in . These interactive sessions serve as a lifeline for mothers, providing them with the practical knowledge needed to navigate optimal breastfeeding, hygienic food preparation, and diverse complementary feeding practices for their growing children.

Through the , funded by the Somalia Humanitarian Fund and supported by UNICEF Somalia, we’re creating safe spaces for learning, peer support, and collective resilience against the threat of childhood malnutrition by equipping mothers with the lifelong tools to prevent it, ensuring every child in Jowhar gets the healthy, nourished start they deserve.

Every day, Wardi Relief and Development Initiatives' Community Health Workers (CHWs) in walk tens of kilometers to reach the most remote households in the district, bringing essential health and nutrition services directly to mothers and children.

These local heroes are the backbone of our , delivering lifesaving care directly to households. With support from the Somalia Humanitarian Fund and UNICEF Somalia, CHWs provide early detection of malnutrition in children, offer antenatal support, and provide direct access to healthcare by linking patients to WARDI mobile teams and Primary Health Units.

"If the case is severe and the child needs specialized care, I refer them to the WARDI MCH in Jowhar." Said CHW Fathi Ismail Abdille based in Shiidle Bari village.

"I feel fulfilled when I help people in my community access free and quality healthcare that they would otherwise not get because they cannot afford it," added CHW Guled Ibrahim Osman in Bula Waray village.

In Bula Waray, Baaroweyne, and Shiidle Bari villages in district, distance is only one barrier to healthcare. During floods, impassable roads can make that distance almost impossible to cross. For pregnant women, children needing immunization, and families seeking urgent care, that distance can become a serious health risk.

Through the funded by the Somalia Humanitarian Fund and supported by UNICEF Somalia, Wardi Relief and Development Initiatives' has constructed and equipped three Primary Health Units (PHUs) in these underserved communities.

The new units have brought essential health services closer to these communities that have historically had to travel long distances for care, providing a safer and more reliable point of access, including during difficult seasons.

In the remote villages of Jowhar district, Wardi Relief and Development Initiatives' mobile health teams navigate difficult terrain and challenging conditions to deliver essential health and nutrition services where it matters most.

Through the funded by the Somalia Humanitarian Fund and adequately supplied by UNICEF Somalia, the team serves Bula Waray, Bayhawo, Shiidle Bari, Baaroweyne, and Libiga villages, bringing services closer to communities that face barriers accessing fixed health facilities.

Every visit creates an opportunity to provide consultations, immunization, antenatal care, nutrition screening, IYCF awareness sessions, treatment, and referrals, and to identify health concerns before they become more serious.

When communities can identify a threat early, they have a better chance of acting before it becomes a crisis. Through our project funded by action medeor e.V. and Bundesministerium für wirtschaftliche Zusammenarbeit und Entwicklung (BMZ), Wardi Relief and Development Initiatives' has trained 105 community members in and to identify, verify, and communicate early warning signs of conflict and insecurity.

Participants also received handheld microphones to help relay alerts quickly and mobilize their communities when risks emerge, because early warning is not only about information but also giving communities the time and tools to act.
