In Rajo 2 IDP Camp in Beledweyne, communities are taking action to protect their health and environment. Using sanitation sets distributed through our , funded by the Somalia Humanitarian Fund, residents organized clean-up exercises, collected waste, and introduced safer waste disposal practices.
“We quickly assigned ourselves to clean the camp with the tools we’ve been given,” said Rahma Ali Mohamud.
The impact of this simple yet effective intervention can already be felt, with locals comparing their previous management of waste in their community.
“Disease outbreaks have reduced. The camp was quite dirty and heavily littered. These tools have been really helpful,” noted Habiba Abdullahi Hassan, an IDP at the camp.
These community-led efforts have improved hygiene conditions, reduced risks of disease outbreaks, and restored the dignity of vulnerable families, especially in IDP set-ups.

For many families in Beledweyne, poor sanitation and open defecation have increased the spread of disease, especially during floods and rainy seasons.
To address this challenge, Wardi Relief and Development Initiatives', with support from the Somalia Humanitarian Fund, constructed 61 latrines across the district, including in IDP camps, helping families access safer and more dignified sanitation facilities.
“There were many diseases, especially during the rainy season, because of open defecation,” said Maryan Omar Hassan, who narrated the ordeal in Rajo 2 IDP camp.
Through the , these communities now have access to better sanitary facilities, promoting better hygiene practices and reducing the risk of waterborne diseases such as diarrhea among children.

In Beledweyne, the struggle for clean and safe water has long defined the daily reality of vulnerable communities. Access to safe water remains one of the most urgent needs for vulnerable families in the district.
Through our , funded by the Somalia Humanitarian Fund, Wardi Relief and Development Initiatives' has rehabilitated two shallow wells and two boreholes and constructed two water kiosks in the district, improving access to clean water and reducing protection risks for communities affected by displacement, climate shocks, and water shortages.
“If this well hadn’t been rehabilitated, we would have risked our lives in the river, and many lives would have been lost,” said Halima Marid Mohamed, a resident of Doolagaal village in Beledweyne district.
