Have you ever heard about the COPIC Youth Forum 2026 thematic focus areas?

The Conflict, Peace, Innovation & Climate Youth Forum- COPIC Youth Forum will focus on five key thematic areas that aim to strengthen youth engagement in peacebuilding, climate action, innovation, democratic participation, and social inclusion.

1. The first thematic area, Youth, Peace and Conflict Prevention, will explore the important roles young people play in promoting peacebuilding, social cohesion, community mediation, early warning systems, preventing misinformation, strengthening interregional dialogue, and encouraging non-violent civic engagement. The expected outcome will be youth peace commitments and conflict prevention messages.

2. The second thematic area, Climate Vulnerability, Drought, El Niño Impact and Community Resilience, will address critical climate challenges including drought preparedness, El-Nino risks, displacement, resource-based conflicts, climate-smart livelihoods, green jobs, early warning systems, and urban and coastal climate risks. This area will support the development of youth climate resilience priorities and locally driven adaptation ideas.

3. The third thematic area, Innovation for Peace and Climate Solutions, will highlight the role of youth innovation through digital tools, entrepreneurship, civic technology, community data, storytelling, climate adaptation solutions, green innovation, and scalable local ideas. The expected output will include an innovation shortlist and the COPIC Youth Innovation Catalogue.

4. The fourth thematic area, Youth Leadership and Democratic Participation, will focus on strengthening civic education, responsible youth engagement, peaceful participation, misinformation prevention, inclusive dialogue, and constructive interaction between youth and institutions. The outcome will be a youth civic responsibility statement and non-partisan engagement principles.

5. The fifth thematic area, Inclusion, Gender Equality and Social Cohesion, will ensure meaningful participation of young women, persons with disabilities, marginalized youth, internally displaced youth, rural youth, students, minority voices, and youth-led organizations. This will contribute to inclusion commitments and safeguards for future COPIC forums.

Why Somalia Needs COPIC Youth Forum Now?
Somalia is currently facing interconnected challenges that threaten peace, stability, and sustainable development, including natural disasters, recurring droughts, climate-related shocks, and the forecasted El Niño impacts. The combination of climate pressures, social challenges, and governance issues requires collective action, stronger resilience-building efforts, and meaningful youth engagement.

1. Natural and Climate Shocks: Somalia continues to face severe climate-related challenges, including recurring droughts, the forecasted El Niño in 2026, environmental degradation, and increasing climate uncertainty. These shocks are affecting livelihoods, food security, and community resilience, highlighting the urgent need for climate adaptation and locally driven solutions.

2. Youth Unemployment: With one of the youngest populations in the world, where an estimated 75% of the population is under the age of 30, Somalia faces high levels of youth unemployment and limited economic opportunities. Without meaningful engagement and pathways for employment, young people remain vulnerable to frustration, exclusion, and social instability.

3. Misinformation: The rapid spread of misinformation and disinformation is contributing to social division, mistrust, and increased conflict risks. Strengthening youth awareness, digital responsibility, and access to reliable information is essential for building peaceful and informed communities.

4. Governance Tensions and Democratic Transition: Somalia’s ongoing democratic transition and discussions around the electoral process require greater youth participation, inclusive decision-making, and constructive dialogue between citizens and institutions. Empowering young people as leaders and peacebuilders is critical for strengthening social cohesion, supporting peaceful political processes, and promoting national stability.
