THE GADABUURSI TRADITIONAL LEADERSHIP
ON THE HISTORIC LEGACY OF SAYLAC (ZEILA)
(Zeila), Horn of Africa — The traditional elders and custodians of the Gadabuursi nation hereby issue an official cultural statement reaffirming the historic, spiritual, and intellectual legacy of Saylac, one of the oldest centers of Islamic scholarship and Somali civilization.
For centuries, Saylac has stood as a sanctuary of faith, diplomacy, and maritime prestige. From this historic port city emerged generations of scholars, jurists, and cultural leaders — many of Gadabuursi heritage — who contributed to the advancement of peace, trade, and Islamic learning across the Horn of Africa and beyond.
“Our forefathers did not merely inherit Saylac — they shaped it,” the elders affirm.
“ They safeguarded its order through xeer Somali (customary law), “ NOT XEER-CIISE ” strengthened its scholarly institutions, and upheld its reputation as a beacon of justice, dignity, and inter-clan harmony.”
The Gadabuursi traditional leadership emphasizes that Saylac is not a relic of the past, but a living emblem of cultural sovereignty, identity, and intergenerational responsibility.
Its memory is preserved not through nostalgia, but through honor, stewardship, and rightful recognition.
“Saylac shall never be forgotten,” the statement concludes.
“It will endure as a testament to Gadabuursi wisdom, cultural duty, and ancestral legitimacy — for all time and for all generations.”
