๐ŸŒฟ Somaliland National Tree Planting Day ๐ŸŒฟ

On April 15, 2026, Somaliland marks its National Tree Planting Day, a significant occasion dedicated to environmental protection and building a greener, more resilient future.

The Ministry of Environment and Climate Change encourages all citizens and stakeholders to actively take part in this important initiative.

Tree planting is not just an activity; it is a long-term investment in life, contributing to:
โœ… Combating climate change
โœ… Protecting soil and water resources
โœ… Restoring degraded land
โœ… Promoting sustainable livelihoods

As environmental advocates, we call on everyone to join these efforts in building a sustainable and climate-resilient future.

๐ŸŒณ Every tree planted today is a life saved tomorrow.

When land degrades, the impacts ripple across entire systems, weakening water sources, reducing agricultural productivity, and increasing vulnerability for communities, especially in climate-sensitive regions.

As we advance climate adaptation efforts, we must recognize that restoring land is restoring livelihoods, ecosystems, and future opportunities.

โ€œLand is our most vital infrastructure. When land degrades, water systems weaken, food production declines, and communities become more vulnerable. Investing in healthy land is investing in people, stability, and long-term prosperity.โ€

For regions like Somaliland and across the Horn of Africa, this is not optional; it is essential for resilience and long-term development.

Celebrating the Class of 2025!

Iโ€™m proud to celebrate the graduation of the AWFโ€“Wall Youth Leadership Program Class of 2025 ๐ŸŽ“๐ŸŒ

This remarkable cohortโ€”comprising 16 Policy Fellows and 14 Leadership & Management Fellows from 21 countries, now joins a growing network of 108 alumni committed to driving transformative change across Africa

Over the past nine months, this journey has been both challenging and inspiring. Through learning, collaboration, and shared experiences with fellows from across Africa, we strengthened our leadership skills and deepened our commitment to creating meaningful change.

During the graduation, leaders from AWF and UNEP reminded us that this milestone is not the end, but the beginning of a lifelong journey of impact. That message strongly resonated with many of us as we reflected on the experiences, knowledge, and networks we have built throughout the fellowship.

Iโ€™m grateful to be part of such an incredible network of young African leaders committed to shaping a better future for our continent.

The Centre for Climate Change and Land Restoration (CCCLR) was honored to organize a Youth Consultation under Youth Climate Adaptation Action Day 2025, the largest-running annual youth adaptation event worldwide.

Through this collective effort, young people from 90 countries actively engaged in consultations on Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) and National Adaptation Plans (NAPs), ensuring youth voices were meaningfully informed of national and global climate adaptation processes.

Beyond consultations, the campaign reached over 31 million people on social media, amplifying youth-led solutions, locally led adaptation, and climate resilience across the globe.

๐Ÿ“„ If you would like to read more about the outcomes of the Youth Consultations, you can access the Global Youth Call to Action here: https://gca.org/reports/mobilizing-youth-led-adaptation-action-5-years-of-the-youth-leadership-and-education-program/

This recognition reinforces the power of youth leadership, collaboration, and locally grounded climate action. We remain committed to advancing inclusive adaptation and translating global commitments into real impact on the ground.

โœจ Grateful to all partners, youth leaders, and communities who made this possible. The work continues.

For the past five years, the AWF Wall Youth Leadership Program, a flagship initiative of the African Wildlife Foundation supported by the Wall Family Foundation, has been empowering Africaโ€™s next generation of conservation leaders. What began as a bold vision has grown into a pan-African movement, with 108 alumni from 30 countries applying leadership, policy, and management skills to drive African-led conservation solutions across the continent and beyond.

๐ŸŒ Applications are now open for the 2026 cohort across two fellowship tracks:
๐Ÿ”น AWFโ€“Wall Policy Fellowship (in partnership with UNEP)
For young professionals eager to influence global environmental governance and elevate Africaโ€™s priorities in international decision-making spaces.

๐Ÿ”น AWFโ€“Wall Leadership & Management Fellowship
For conservation practitioners already creating impact on the ground and seeking to strengthen leadership, build resilient teams, and tackle complex conservation challenges.

โณ Each track runs for 9 months (Aprilโ€“December) and welcomes 15 fellows from across Africa, leaders committed to protecting Africaโ€™s biodiversity with clarity, courage, and context-driven leadership.

๐Ÿ“… Application deadline: 20 January 2026

Most people can describe what land degradation looks like: dry soil, fewer plants, declining harvests.

Far fewer can clearly explain what land restoration means.

๐Ÿ”น Land degradation occurs when soil loses its health, fertility and structure because of overuse, erosion, pollution or climate stress.
๐Ÿ”น Land restoration is the process of bringing that land back to life โ€“ through improved farming practices, protected forests and nature-based solutions that store carbon and water.

Over the next two weeks, weโ€™ll highlight how each major driver of land degradation can be matched with a practical restoration solution, from policy reforms to farmer-led action.

Inspired by real questions people search about land, soil and restoration.

Soil and water conservation through soil bunds is vital for restoring degraded lands.

โœ… Reduces soil erosion
โœ… Improves water infiltration
โœ… Supports vegetation growth

By protecting the land, soil bunds enhance agricultural productivity and strengthen community resilience against climate-related challenges, making landscapes more sustainable and communities more secure.
