ERDO Participates in National Coordination Meeting on Drought Response and Humanitarian Preparedness

Today, ERDO proudly took part in a high-level national coordination meeting held at the Ministry of Resettlement and Humanitarian Affairs of Somalilad, Hargeisa. The gathering brought together key stakeholders from across the humanitarian spectrum — including representatives from UN agencies, Islamic and international organizations, local NGOs, government institutions, and members of the legislative and drought preparedness committees.

The meeting, officially convened by the Ministry, focused on strengthening collaboration and preparedness in response to the ongoing drought crisis. Key objectives outlined by Director General Mukhtaar Abdi Jaama (Baaxo) included:

✅ Enhancing coordination and joint humanitarian response
✅ Establishing a unified framework for drought impact assessments
✅ Accelerating emergency preparedness and response in partnership with government agencies

Deputy Minister Abdirahman Shide Bille emphasized the urgency of collective action to mitigate the effects of drought and ensure that all actors work in harmony toward shared goals.

Participants from UNOCHA, NADFOR, the NGO Consortium, and Islamic organizations contributed valuable insights and recommendations, stressing the importance of:

🔹 Unified assessments to guide equitable aid distribution
🔹 Strengthened partnerships for effective humanitarian delivery
🔹 Regular coordination forums to maintain momentum

The meeting concluded with a strong call to action from Minister Saleeban Du’ale X. Jama, urging all stakeholders to prepare proactively and collaboratively before the situation escalates into a severe humanitarian emergency.

🤝 ERDO remains committed to supporting coordinated efforts that prioritize the most vulnerable communities and uphold the principles of unity, equity, and resilience.

ERDO Emergency Alert: Critical Drought Situation in Sanaag Region

ERDO's latest evaluation reveals a rapidly deteriorating drought situation in the Sanaag region, with severe consequences for the population.

Key Findings:
Widespread Environmental Scarcity: A critical depletion of pasture and extreme water scarcity is being experienced across the entire region. Premise for Concern: This crisis is occurring during the initial months of Jiilaal, the most severe and longest dry season. This early onset signals a grave warning that the situation will worsen in the coming months.
· Deepening Humanitarian Crisis: The drought has directly led to a severe lack of clean water and rising food insecurity. Emergency-level food consumption scores (FCS) and high hunger gaps (HDD) are now prevalent.
· Vulnerability Amplified by Returnees: The situation is critically exacerbated by the return of many households following recent peace agreements in Somaliland. These communities have arrived with completely collapsed livelihood sources, placing immense strain on already scarce resources.
· Health Alert: A sharp rise in malnutrition rates among Pregnant and Lactating Women (PLWs) and children under five is now alarming and requires immediate intervention to prevent a full-scale health catastrophe.

ERDO is scaling its emergency response and calls for urgent support to avert a deeper disaster.
