Training on Mental Health and Psychosocial Support (MHPSS)

On behalf of the Horn of Africa Development Institute (HADI), I was honored to participate in a valuable training on Mental Health and Psychosocial Support (MHPSS) under the Sustainable Urban Integration of Displacement-Affected Communities (SUIDAC) project in Borama.

The initiative is being carried out by the Borama Local Government in collaboration with Taakulo Somali Community, with support from Cities Alliance. Hosted at Rays Hotel, the training aimed to enhance participants’ understanding and practical skills in mental health awareness, psychosocial care, and strengthening resilience among displacement-affected communities.

Throughout the sessions, participants gained important knowledge and practical approaches for promoting mental well-being, assisting vulnerable groups, and improving coordinated community-based support systems. The training also emphasized the significance of strong partnerships between local authorities, humanitarian agencies, and development organizations in addressing mental health concerns.

We extend our sincere appreciation to the organizers, facilitators, partners, and all participants for their dedication and valuable contributions toward building healthier, more inclusive, and resilient communities.

Best regards,
Mr. Abdiwali Abdirashid Aroush
Director, Horn of Africa Development Institute (HADI)

🌿 National Tree Planting Day 2026 – Republic of Somaliland

On behalf of the Horn of Africa Development Institute (HADI), I had the privilege of participating in the National Tree Planting Day event held at Rays Hotel on April 15, 2026.

As Director, I spoke to the audience about the importance of tree planting in preserving our environment and helping to combat climate change, which remains a growing threat today. I emphasized that environmental protection is a collective responsibility that requires the involvement of everyone.

I also urged the communities of Borama District to take initiative by planting trees around their homes, noting that small, local actions can make a significant impact on creating a greener and healthier environment.

Furthermore, I highlighted the One Health Approach, explaining the close relationship between human health, animal health, and environmental health, and the need to address them together for sustainable development.

Let us unite our efforts to promote a healthier, greener, and more resilient future.

🌳 Plant a tree today for a sustainable tomorrow.

Yours sincerely,
Mr. Abdiwali Abdirashid Aroush
Director, Horn of Africa Development Institute (HADI)

What we release into the environment returns to us.

In the food we eat.
The water we drink.
The air we breathe.

Protecting human health means protecting the entire ecosystem. That is the foundation of .

A One Health approach brings all sectors together to:

✅reduce environmental contamination at source
✅monitor risks across the animal-human-environment interface
✅strengthen health systems to detect and respond faster
✅protect biodiversity and natural habitats

Demand for a cleaner environment is not a policy goal. It is a health imperative.

SDG 4 calls for quality education - this means reducing risks so that disasters don't disrupt schooling, and making sure that schools educate children on disaster risks for a resilient future.

We must empower the next generation for a resilient future.

To reduce flood risk in cities, we need to engineer a system that intercepts rainfall, pumps water deep into the ground, stabilises riverbanks, and makes cities more pleasant to live in year-round.🏙️

Wait a moment... Nature has already designed a system that does all that, and more: trees.
We just need to plant more of them. 🌳🌲🌳

Here's how trees reduce flood risk:
🌧️ Intercepting rainfall
A forest canopy catches and slows rain before it reaches the ground – reducing peak river levels during storms and buying critical time for soil absorption.

🌱 The sponge effect
Tree roots channel deep into soil, drawing surface water down and away from rivers and drainage systems. Forested catchments consistently show lower runoff than bare land, even during heavy rainfall events.

🪨 Stabilising riverbanks and preventing erosion
Roots bind soil, trap sediment in upper catchments, and keep waterways clear. That directly protects a river's capacity to carry floodwater – long after the rain has stopped.

Catchment studies and tree-planting programmes along flood-prone rivers in the United Kingdom show measurable reductions in surface runoff where woodland is present or restored.

🌳Trees are nature-based flood risk engineering – and they belong in every urban flood risk management strategy as a recognised, costed, and planned component.

Effective disaster risk reduction depends on a shared understanding of risk – within countries and across borders.

The Global Disaster-Related Statistics Framework (G-DRSF) marks a milestone in building a shared foundation, to better understand disaster risk and resilience.

For the first time, a comprehensive global statistical framework has been agreed, bringing together:
🔵 National Statistical Offices
🔵 Disaster management agencies
🔵 Key stakeholders and data producers
— all within a common architecture for defining, compiling, and using disaster-related statistics.

Better data leads to better decisions.
