Grandmother Project - Change Through Culture Grandmothers Project envisions grandmothers as leaders who are pushing for social and cultural change

Grandmother Project - Change through Culture (GMP) is a small American and Senegalese nonprofit organization established in 2005. GMP's mission is to improve the health and well-being of women and children in developing countries by developing programs that are built on cultural roles and values, that promote intergenerational communication and that are grandmother-inclusive. MP's innovative appro

ach recognizes the central role of grandmothers, and elders in general, in matters related to women and children in non-Western cultures and harnesses their knowledge and natural leadership capacities to influence positive change on issues such as early marriage, teen pregnancy, female ge***al mutilation, and children’s education. The GMP strategy has also been used to address maternal and child nutrition/health.

It’s deeply painful. Its impacts can last a lifetime.

Female ge***al mutilation (FGM) can cause long-term physical and psychological damage, with serious medical complications.

In humanitarian and fragile contexts, the risks associated with FGM may be further exacerbated.

UNICEF and partners are committed to ending this human rights violation by 2030, once and for all.

🎉 This month we had the pleasure of celebrating 13 young girl leaders who successfully passed their Baccalaureate exams! 💐 As active participants of Grandmother Project’s Girls’ Holistic Development Program, each young girl leader received leadership and personal development training to become positive role models in their communities. Along with traditional education, the young girl leaders also attended schools in which positive cultural values are taught and reinforced by integrating grandmothers in the learning process.

👩🏾‍🎓👵🏽 "Your academic performance is the result of individual effort, of course, but also of values of courage, citizenship, willpower, commitment, self-esteem, self-confidence, respect, perseverance and motivation." Grandmother Project National Director Mamadou Coulibaly told the young girl leaders.
In addition to celebrating the amazing accomplishments of the young girl leaders, Grandmother Project also offered guidance and support for their future education and career goals!

Kael Bessel, young female leaders trained by GMP Change Through Culture as part of the holistic development of girls and boys, thanks to funding from UNFPA, are getting to work during this month dedicated to reforestation by mobilizing their peers for civic engagement through the concept of “one girl, one tree.” This activity, which is part of their action plan, stems from a personal initiative by the young women's association under the leadership of their leaders, thus constituting a simple gesture that will have a lasting impact on the community and the environment.

Now and always, we remain inspired by our dearly missed friend and former Chair, Desmond Tutu. A very different world could be created if all leaders followed his example.
