Lion Heart Medical Centre

Lion Heart Medical Centre Fully equipped hospital (X-ray, Surgeries and more) that offers accessible and affordable healthcare in the rural heart of Sierra Leone. We are not there yet.

Lion Heart: Healing with Heart The Lion Heart Medical Centre is a second-line health facility located in Yele, the rural heart of Sierra Leone. It was founded by the Lion Heart Foundation. The direct catchment area of the hospital is roughly 100.000 people from the surrounding communities, but patients also travel from far beyond. With a capacity of 80 beds divided over male, female, paediatric, i

solation and maternity wards, the hospital provides good and timely basic health care services. The hospital is fully equipped with an operating theatre, x-ray machine, biochemistry analyzer and more. Main targets groups include the under-fives and pregnant women. With around 70 local staff members and 2 expatriates, 10.000 patients are treated annually. Goal of the Lion Heart Foundation is to support the hospital on its way to being a self-sustainable organisation, fully handed over to the local management team in Sierra Leone. Our mission has succeeded when the support from Lion Heart Foundation is not longer necessary and Lion Heart Medical Centre has become independent. For our mission to succeed, we will need the help from local and foreign sponsors to fund projects that will bring us closer to this goal, one step at a time. Meet the lovely Ejatu, a 17-year-old whose life suddenly changed when she had a tragic motorbike accident in Makeni City. The accident left her with a fractured foot and sadly resulted in the death of the driver. Ejatu was first rushed to Makeni Regional Hospital for emergency care, before being referred to the Lion Heart Medical Center for specialized treatment and further management of her injury.

At LHMC, Ejatu underwent a successful surgical procedure where an external fixator (ex-fix) was applied to stabilize her fracture. Through the dedication of the medical team, continuous care, and her own strength and determination, she is now moving around and responding well to treatment. In the pictures, you can see how she is practicing to walk and how nurse Foday is giving wound care. Ejatu is such a strong & happy person! โค๐Ÿ’ช๐Ÿ’ช

When asked how she sees the care at LHMC, Ejatu expressed gratitude for the support, attention, and treatment she has received from the doctors, nurses, and hospital staff throughout her recovery journey. Her story is a reminder that even after painful and tragic moments, quality healthcare and resilience can help restore lives step by step. We continue to wish Ejatu a smooth recovery as she regains her strength each day!

The Lion Heart Medical Centre now has a six member Supervisory Board, fully consisting of Sierra Leoneans with different capabilities. This board has been installed with the aim to improve local supervision, as part of the larger transition process from an International NGO to a Sierra Leonean NGO ๐Ÿ‡ธ๐Ÿ‡ฑ๐Ÿ‡ธ๐Ÿ‡ฑ๐Ÿ‡ธ๐Ÿ‡ฑ

The chairman of the Supervisory Board is Professor Mohamed Syed Fofanah. The other members are Dr. Augustine Jimissa (District Medical Officer, Tonkolili District), John Bosco Massaquoi Esq. (โ Legal Officer), Paramount Chief Bai Komp Kanaseng III (PC of Gbonkolenken Chiefdom), Madam Yabom Sesay (โ Chairperson, Tonkolili District Council) and Mr. Lansana Senesie (โ Accountant).

The first meeting, as seen in the pictures, was attended by four board members and several members of LHMC's daily Management Team. The meeting was centered on the role and responsibility of the Supervisory Board and high-priority areas of the hospitalโ€™s daily operations, including the hospital's financial position and the importance of strong external relations with government agencies, international partners, donors, and the wider community.

In the catchment area of the Lion Heart Medical Centre are 22 PHUโ€™s (Peripheral Health Units = government health clinics) offering basic healthcare in hard to reach communities. Twice a year, we invite the staff from these PHU's for the ๐๐‡๐” ๐“๐ซ๐š๐ข๐ง๐ข๐ง๐  ๐ƒ๐š๐ฒ. To build knowledge & capacity of these vital healthcare workers and to improve our collaboration for better healthcare delivery.

Training topics included malnutrition in children, malaria in pregnancy, neonatal sepsis, herbal medications, self medications/over the counter drugs, and more. At the end of the day, participants received certificates and a donation of assorted medical items to support the work in their PHU, as can be seen in the picture.

This training day also marks the start of a new cycle of outreach! We will visit all the 22 PHUโ€™s to meet with the local community and discuss public health topics

LHMC received a beautiful from Madam Kadiatu Kanu, an indigene of Gbonkolenken Chiefdom, where the hospital resides. The donor could not deliver the items in person as she stays outside of Sierra Leone, but she sent them through a relative. She donated two wheelchairs and five walkers in different colours. A very usefull donation, as we receive many patients with severe injuries, that need practice to walk. LHMC appreciates this act of kindness!

LHMC had the pleasure of hosting the Sierra Leone Medical and Dental Council in Yele to inspect the facilities and medical procedures in the hospital. The visit is part of the hospital's transition process from an International NGO to a National NGO.

The delegation toured the hospital facilities, reviewed patient records and engaged the LHMC team with questions. One moment stood out: when a member of the visiting delegation spoke with admiration about the specialised facilities available in the Lion Heart Medical Centre. The overall feedback was good, highlighting our commitment to quality care.
