Through the Igniting Community Action to End Teenage Pregnancy, FGM, and SGBV project, supported by thIreland in Sierra Leoneerra Leone, Girls in STEM Initiative is implementing reusable sanitary pad training and digital literacy sessions for girls in Matainkay and Masorie communities.

We are empowering girls with practical skills to manage their menstrual health with dignity and confidence, while strengthening their knowledge in digital and ICT skills. By integrating health education with technology, we are supporting girls to stay in school, become self-reliant, and make informed decisions about their futures. Reusable pads gives them confidence, freedom, and control every month

Together for a , we remain committed to breaking stigma, improving access to menstrual products and education, and creating safe environments where menstruation never limits a girl’s dignity, health, or education.

Clean Periods, Confident Girls 🩺

Through the Community Action Project, supported by the Ireland in Sierra Leone, we are training girls in Masorie and matainkay Community on menstrual hygiene and sanitary pad production. This will empowers girls with knowledge on safe menstrual health practices while providing practical skills for sustainable livelihood.

The training also creates a safe space to break the silence around menstruation misconceptions, build their confidence, and promote dignity every period. Every girl deserves access to a clean periods, proper care, and support.

When girls are empowered with menstrual hygiene education, they stay healthier, remain in school, and thrive in their communities.

Today, we celebrate 65 years of independence and proudly Girls' in STEM Initiativeone our land of strength, resilience, and progress.

At In STEM Initiative, we believe national development begins with empowering young people, especially girls, through STEM education, digital literacy, vocational skills, entrepreneurship, and job opportunities.

We are calling for more investment in STEM education, career opportunities for women and girls in underserved communities, vocational skills training, entrepreneurship support, and investment in SMEs to create sustainable livelihoods and funding/ partnerships support to Women-Led and Youth-Led organization.

We extend warm wishes to our partners, donors, staff, volunteers, students, and beneficiaries for being part of this journey.

We were excited to partner with the Aurora Foundation, to host a one-day symposium with colleges across the Western Area district, raising awareness on the importance of girls and women in TECH.

Centered on this year’s theme, “AI for Development: Girls Shaping the Digital Future,” the session was highly interactive. Many students are already using AI tools, but the discussions helped deepen their understanding of how AI can support learning, research, community development and innovation.

We introduced various AI tools and explored how they can enhance education while inspiring more girls to pursue careers in technology. Students also shared ideas on how they can be part of shaping the digital future. Their ideas and engagement showed that the potential is already there.

As a next step, Girls' in STEM Initiative, will roll out targeted trainings across institutions to equip girls with AI knowledge and basic digital literacy skills to close the digital gap.

Together, we are shaping a future where girls lead in technology, creativity and innovation.

This year’s theme, “AI for Development: Girls Shaping the Digital Future,” reflects the direction our world is heading and at Girls' in STEM Initiative, it is at the heart of what we do.

We are committed to inspiring and empowering girls to take their place in the digital world and close the gender digital gap. Through our Smart Girls Connect Project and other ongoing initiatives supported by theIreland in Sierra Leone and partners, we are equipping girls with essential digital and AI skills to learn, innovate, and lead.

This year, we will be celebrating Girls in ICT Day with girls and students across different institutions and communities, engaging them on the importance of AI in development and how they can use AI tools to solve real-life challenges in their communities and education.

We call on the government, donors, partners, and organizations within and beyond Sierra Leone to invest more in empowering girls, especially those in underserved communities in TECH, AI and Robotics.

We also encourage the Ministry of Education and education stakeholders to integrate AI tools into teaching and learning to improve research, strengthen learning outcomes, and prepare students for the future.

The Gara department has successfully completed its training, equipping women with trending gara tie-dye and batik skills to boost creativity, income, and self-reliance.

Through the Igniting Community Action to End Teenage Pregnancy, SGBV, and FGM project, with support from the Ireland in Sierra Leone, has successfully launched a 4-week digital literacy training for girls in masantigie, Masorie, and Matainkay communities.

Over the next four weeks, these girls will gain practical, hands-on skills in introduction to computer, document creation, internet navigation on cybersecurity, how girls should stay safe online, AI generation tools, and basic spreadsheet calculations. This training is designed to take them from the unknown into known building their confidence, equipping them with essential digital skills to improve future opportunities.

We believe that closing the gender digital gap starts with empowering girls in underserved communities building their confidence/ curiosity creativity, and ability to innovate through technology.

Every girl deserves access to digital opportunities, and together with the Government of Ireland, we are making that a reality.

Our training reaches communities like Waterloo, Rogbere, and Matainkay Village, where participants learn culinary skills and event decoration for weddings and special occasions.
