3-Year Update on PDYC: What You Need to Know
Today, as I clocked three-year in office as Chairman of the great Pujehun District Youth Council - PDYC, let me firstly seized this golden opportunity to congratulate myself for my brave stout-headed support in propelling the interest of young men and women of our beloved district throughout this turbulent era.
Three-year ago, a great leader and brother in whose immense capacity I serves today as Youth Chairman, left his own land 🇸🇱 for the United States 🇺🇸
Brima Fullah (General Kat), been the erstwhile Chairman of the Pujehun District Youth Council (PDYC), was engaged in hard work and tremendous sacrifice to honour his sacred responsibility as Youth Chairman (then).
Despite the fact that it wasn’t an easy progress in the mindset of many people, it was hard for some of us to let him go to the Whitman’s Land (America), but we knew it was for the best, so we absorbed the solidarity and let him go!
The traveling of General Kat to the USA came as a “beckon light of hope” to many young men and women of our beloved district (Pujehun!!).
I hope the transition is easy for him in the land of the free and the brave (America). Indeed his departure to the United States came as a surprise to the world, and served as momentous moment to some of us who truly believe in the good spirit of promoting one and other.
It’s obvious that the work of the youth council and his legacy in the development of the district and the youth sector are still alive.
Updating you and the general public, it's important to let you know that through collective support and responsibility, my administration at PDYC is highly recognized for progress and development. We remain as one of the best youth councils in the country.
Together with my hardworking CYCs and DYCs, with support from key stakeholders and partners. Here’s summary of what our administration has visibly achieved over the years:
*Youth Resource Center:* We’ve formally opened the Youth Resource Center in Pujehun District. With direct support from the Rt. Hon. Dr. Sidie Mohamed Tunis and Hon. Mohamed Rahman Swaray. The Youth Resource Center is currently equipped with Computer Lab, Internet Access, Tailoring Department, Cinema that accommodates over 150 spectators, power supply, DSTV and 65 inches TV, Literacy Training Facility and Conference Hall. With Chairs.
*Mobility:* We've provided mobility to all the 14 Chiefdom Youth Chairmen (CYCs) and the main Secretariat (15 motorbikes). Note: There’s no chiefdom in the district without a motorbike under this administration. The support directly came from: UNDP and MoYA (10), HE President Julius Maada Bio (4) and the Rt. Hon. Dr. Sidie Mohamed Tunis (1).
*Empowerment Opportunities:* We’ve provided micro-finance opportunity to 20 young women amounting to NLe 20,000 to enhance business opportunities in the district with support from MAPCO. We’ve also succeeded in advocating for employment, scholarship and other empowerment opportunities for young people with stakeholders, government and other agencies.
*PDYC Hall And Land Space:* We’ve secured a huge land space and have secured the youth center. We’ve lobbied with the Rt. Hon. Dr. Sidie Mohamed Tunis and remitted NLe 100,000 for the fencing and rehabilitation of the youth council hall. Based on our assessment, all materials, services and resources required for this project cost NLe 500,000. Thus, we enhanced progress and available materials derived from this project are constantly in place as we continue to lobby for more funding opportunities to complete the project.
*Advocacy For Youth:* We've also advocated for the facilitation of special medical operation opportunity to young people in and outside Sierra Leone, and support to youth activities in the area of football, Ataya base, support groups and many other activities which cost thousands of $ dollars.
*Awareness Raising And Public Education:* We’re conducting consistent awareness raising and public education on so many national issues including the abolition of Kush intake among young people, nonviolence campaign, Feed Salone Initiative, the free quality education etc.
*Capacity Building and Training:* We’ve provided and participated in many capacity building initiatives for our constituents at tertiary level and partnership level. We’ve also mobilized resources to support youth’s development agenda in the district. With strong support, we've provided Skills Training Opportunity for our Youth and equipped them with necessary skills at different levels.
*Partnership, Collaboration and Coordination:* We’ve built and still enhancing strong partnership, coordination and collaboration with other institutions, youth groups, donors, stakeholders and MDAs in relation to youth activities. Our relationship with stakeholders, youth organizations, executives members and partners remains unblemished and robust.
*Meetings and Workshops:* We initiated the monthly Youth Meeting at Chiefdom levels. We’re also regular participants for the sectoral meetings and workshops among youth sector partners, Ministry of Youth Affairs, Council, and stakeholders to name many but a few.
*Volunteer Services:* We’re providing voluntary services at chiefdom levels in areas like community cleaning, road maintenance and brushing, development services and many other district’s initiatives.
*Database System, Monitoring, Evaluation and Reporting:* We’ve established a comprehensive database system for all structures under PDYC ranging from district, chiefdom and section. While we’ve submitted all necessary reports to the appropriate authorities and institutions, we’ll equally continue to monitor and evaluate progress and constraints for possible improvements.
Of course, our developmental growth as a council is still in-line with the PDYC Road-map we developed before the departure of Brima Fullah and it remains the fundamental auxiliary towards youth sector development programme in the district and beyond.
It would be unfair for my administration and the people of Pujehun district, to either forget easily, or to overlook the tremendous contributions of General Kat and his God-send wisdom in the district.
I’m with the strong conviction that even when he’s in the United States, he still embodies the true spirit for the collective development of the emerging generation.
As a reasoned young man who has always cultivated the culture in helping humanity (young people), I have no iota of doubt that one-day there will be a light after the tunnel for all progressive young men and women who hail from the district, despite the current socio-economic dilemma that keep to engulf this current productive asset (youth).
I pray that the Almighty God will continue to shower abundant blessings on all of us in our struggle to eke out an existence.
On behalf of the the entire youth of Pujehun District, I wish you a happy stay in the United States, my able brother, General Kat.
My administration has being able to navigate through this complex sector of society by making them to land on a safe harbor.
The support and contribution of everyone is essential to maintain and enhance further development in the district. While we remain committed as a responsible youth council, we’ll continue to advocate and lobby with all and sundry for more productive development.
Finally, let me extend my thanks and appreciation to all stakeholders , youth and your groups and well-wishers who at this critical period have being able to put hands on deck, to help me sail through this difficult tide of human ocean.
Please see some photos from our achievements made so far. Thanks.
Sincerely,
Mohamed Kallon
