🎤 Theme: "Youth Voices for Smart Farming: Shaping Policy for the Next Generation of Change Makers"

It was an incredible opportunity for our organization to actively participate and witness young leaders, policymakers, and innovators around the world reimagining the future of agriculture. They shared experiences and recommendations focused on shifting the perception of agriculture from a "poor man's field" to a lucrative, respectable business. The energy and ideas shared were truly inspiring from climate-smart solutions to digital farming tools.

We remain committed to amplifying youth voices and ensuring that the next generation of farmers and change makers are heard, supported, and empowered.

We are pleased to announce our participation in a one-day capacity-building training workshop held on May 21, 2026. The workshop was organized by Restless Development Sierra Leone and took place at the Pastoral Center in Makeni.

Our Administrative Officer, Mr. Musa S Kamara, represented the organization at the event.

The training focused on youth-led organizations and institutional capacity building, structured around three core pillars:

· Engage
· Empowerment
· Connect

Facilitators provided comprehensive coverage of these themes, including strategies for utilizing advocacy, awareness, and accountability to effectively engage government and other stakeholders; empowering beneficiaries or target groups; and establishing connections (networking) with similar organizations, agencies, or groups.

A key concept introduced during the training was the "Hackathon" — defined as a collaborative process in which young, constructive individuals identify a pressing issue affecting a specific population or community and develop solutions through advocacy, awareness-raising, and empowerment initiatives.

The workshop was both informative and engaging, featuring practical exercises that enhanced the learning experience.

We are honored to participate in the 2026 National Labour Conference and Social Dialogue, organized by the Sierra Leone Labour Congress, the Ministry of Employment, Labour and Social Security, and the Sierra Leone Employers Federation. The event took place from 30 April to 1 May 2026 at the Miatta Conference Centre in Freetown, as part of this year’s May Day celebrations.

The conference brought together government officials, labour unions, employers, and international partners.

Key highlights:

Deputy Minister of Employment, Hon. Mohamed Lansana Dumbuya, chaired the event and announced major labour reforms:

· Ratification of ILO conventions on migrant workers and occupational safety
· New laws: Employment Act (2023), Work Permit Act (2023), Overseas Employment & Migration Act
· Minimum wage increased from Le800 to Le1,200 (effective April 2026)
· Pensions improved from Le25 to Le250

Challenges acknowledged: youth unemployment, wage disparities, pension compliance, and skills mismatch between graduates and market needs.

Vice President Dr. Mohamed Juldeh Jalloh spoke on “Challenges & Opportunities of Decent Work in the Digital Era” – stressing the need to ensure digital jobs benefit all, especially youth and women in the informal economy.

Marx Conteh (Secretary General, Sierra Leone Labour Congress) praised the peaceful social dialogue approach.

The presence of Care for Farmers Initiatives - CFI ensured that the voices of farmers and agricultural workers were part of the conversation on decent work, skills development, and food security. During the event, we met with two inspiring agriprenuers organizations:

* Siato Company (based in Bo district)
* Cassavity SL Limited (based in Makeni)

Their work is truly amazing – they are driving value addition by processing cassava into flour, garri, and foo-foo, directly promoting food security and creating decent livelihoods along the agricultural value chain.

The conference concluded with social dialogue sessions, panel discussions, and stakeholder engagements – all focused on bridging the gap between education and employment, tackling skills shortages, and exploring opportunities within the creative industry. Activities climaxed with the national commemoration of May Day, hosted by President Julius Maada Bio.

Care for Farmers Initiatives - CFI was honored to take part in the International Youth Talk, "Why Young People Should Care About Agriculture," organized by Go Study Global Education.

Our contribution centered on shifting youth mindset—helping young people see agriculture as a professional field and a viable business, not as a "poor man's job" as it has too often been perceived in the past.

We are grateful for the participation certificate received by our director Mohamed Sesay, and we extend sincere thanks to Go Study Global Education for hosting this impactful event.

CFI remains committed to empowering the next generation of agripreneurs.

HAPPY INTERNATIONAL WOMEN’S DAY

Women smallholder farmers are the backbone of agriculture. They plant, harvest, process, and market food that nourishes communities. Their knowledge of the land, commitment to their families, and determination in the face of challenges make them true champions of sustainable development.

Their courage, innovation, and perseverance inspire us all.

We will continue working together to build a future where women smallholders farmers are recognized, supported, and empowered to reach their full potential.
