Today, (23rd April 2026), elected and appointed women leaders convened at the Sierra Leone Teachers Union Hall, Bombali District, for a Quarterly Capacity-Strengthening Accompaniment Training under the Irish Aid–supported project Strengthening Women’s Equal and Effective Participation in Decision-Making Processes.

The session focused on Gender-Responsive Planning and Budgeting, combining practical budgeting exercises, key principles, and Monitoring and Evaluation importance to deepen understanding. Participants actively shared experiences, and learning gains were clearly reflected in improved pre- and post-test results.

Together, we continue building confident, capable women leaders driving inclusive governance.

Under the Irish Aid Civil Society funded project through Trocaire titled “Strengthening Women for Equal and Effective Participation in Decision Making Processes,” the Bi-Monthly Accompaniment Training for Aspiring Women Leaders for the 2028 Elections was successfully held today (16/04/2026) at the Sierra Leone Teachers Union Hall (SLTU).

The session focused on key topics including electoral laws, the roles and functions of the Electoral Commission, and the general processes of elections. Aspiring women from different political parties were effectively capacitated, with a notable improvement in their knowledge as demonstrated by the difference between the pre-test and post-test results.

The training recorded a massive turnout, and the session was highly interactive. Participants showed great enthusiasm for their leadership aspirations and a strong willingness to continue learning.

As part of the Irish Aid funded project titled “Strengthening Women’s Effective and Equal Participation in Decision-Making Processes,” a chiefdom-level activity on strengthening community members and local stakeholders in women’s leadership, mentorship, community dialogue, and practical actions for gender equality was successfully held on Thursday 9th April 2026 in Pakimassagbom Chiefdom.

The session took place at the Mapaki Community Centre, with massive participation from community members across various sections of the chiefdom. Discussions focused on enhancing women’s leadership roles within their structures and groups.

The project continues to make significant impact by increasing awareness among women and community members on their rights to own and control land, participate in decision-making processes, and advocate for their rights using the GEWE Act.

However, challenges such as the underrepresentation of women, persistent cultural barriers, and limited support from men in promoting women’s leadership still exist and continue to slow progress toward achieving the objectives of the Gender Equality and Women's Empowerment Act.
