Ministry of Youth Affairs and UNFPA launch Innovation Challenge to Empower Young Women
On 12 August, International Youth Day, the Ministry of Youth Affairs and UNFPA launched a new Innovation Challenge for Young Women Leading Change. The initiative is aimed at supporting innovative solutions that are led by young-women to improve the lives of women and young people.
The challenge invites one-year proposals from groups or organizations led by young women between 18 and 35 years of age. Applicants who successfully complete the first round will be invited to pitch their ideas to an independent jury.
The challenge focuses on eight key thematic areas including skills building, entrepreneurship and income generation; improving health services; ending gender-based violence; ending child marriage; reducing teenage pregnancy; addressing female ge***al mutilation; and preventing drug and substance abuse.
Speaking following the announcement of the innovation challenge, the Minister of Youth Affairs, Mohamed Orman Bangura, highlighted that it is aimed at โ€œenhancing young womenโ€™s leadership across the country and harnessing the creativity, energy, and entrepreneurial spirit of young women to drive positive change to address the issues affecting young people in Sierra Leone.โ€
The winning groups or organizations will each receive NLE 25,000 to implement their solution, in addition to capacity building and mentorship support throughout the one-year initiative.
Nadia Rasheed, the UNFPA Country Representative, emphasized that โ€œleadership and participation of young women is critical to advancing national development priorities and helping young people to reach their full potential.โ€ She added that this challenge was aimed at young women who are passionate about making a positive difference in their communities.
To ensure a wide reach, the initiative is accepting applications online or offline, and in writing, audio or video in English or Krio until 2 September 2024. For more information, interested applicants can contact [email protected] or [email protected].
