Early marriage is a union where at least one of the individuals is below the age of 18. It often occurs before a person is physically, emotionally, and mentally mature enough to handle the responsibilities of marriage.
Here are the Consequences of Early Marriage, highlighted by CFC-SL (Concern for Children’s Organization Sierra Leone):
1. Health Risks: Young girls face serious health complications during pregnancy and childbirth, including higher risks of maternal and infant mortality.
2. Interrupted Education: Many girls drop out of school after marriage, ending their academic journey and reducing future opportunities.
3. Poverty Cycle: Without education or skills, child brides are more likely to remain in poverty, continuing the cycle for future generations.
4. Gender-Based Violence: Early marriage often exposes girls to domestic violence, emotional abuse, and lack of decision-making power in the home.
5. Loss of Childhood: Child marriage forces girls to take on adult responsibilities too early, robbing them of their childhood and freedom.
6. Emotional and Psychological Trauma: Being forced into marriage at a young age can lead to long-term mental health issues such as depression, anxiety, and low self-esteem.
7. Lack of Economic Independence: Girls who marry early are less likely to gain skills or employment, making them financially dependent on others.8. Increased Risk of Divorce: Early marriages are often unstable due to lack of maturity, which leads to higher chances of separation or divorce.
9. Limited Participation in Society: Girls married early are less likely to participate in leadership, decision-making, or contribute to community development.
10. Higher Risk of Exploitation: Child brides are more vulnerable to sexual exploitation, trafficking, and other forms of abuse.
CFC-SL continues to advocate for strong child protection, education access, and community awareness to end early marriage and protect every child's future.
