Advocate for Social Justice and Development - A S J D- SL joined ActionAid Sierra Leone Northern Regional Office with other partners across Bombali and Kambia districts on to raise awareness on Global Week of Climate Action in Makeni City on climate justice, debts cancelation, and the need to act now.

The was used to sensitize the masses on the dangers of climate change, inhuman actions to nature, land degradation, deforestation, unguided buildings, wastes and other hazardous practices of man.

Advocate for Social Justice and Development - A S J D- SL with funds from ActionAid Sierra Leone provided and supplied teaching and learning materials to ten (10) primary schools in Kono Local Rights Programme operational Chiefdoms and communities. The beneficiary schools were Pre-School at Jaima, Kono District Education (KDEC) Primary Schools in Sumbaidu, Bumpeh, Nyamudu, Tikonko; S.I.C Primary School at Bandafayie, SLYMCO Primary School at Ndorgboi and Roman Catholic Primary Schools at Ngo Town, Condama and Moimandu.

The aim of the provision of these teaching materials is to promote quality teaching and learning, reduce burden on school administrators on constrains of having teaching and learning materials and to help children access quality education in their localities.

The Senior School Quality Assurance Officer, Mr Abdul Salam Tejan-Sie gave the materials to school heads present and thanked the donor for such boost to the beneficiaryschools. He urged the schools to use the materials judiciously as the term has just begun. These schools were supported with cartons of chalks, assorted reading textbooks from Primary three (3) to class six (6), class registers, big ledger books, big size rulers and pens.

The Head Mistress from Pre-Primary School in Jaima said: "This is a timely support for my school and pupils as we are facing little challenge to have some of these materials given to us this afternoon. This will enhance smooth running of my school even though all the learners have not returned to school yet. That was my worry as to how I can cope next week to have full classes running with teaching materials. I am very glad with these precious gifts. Chalks and class registers are key, and with these textbooks, it can aid our lesson notes planning and effective teaching. Thanks to ActionAid Sierra Leone and Advocate for Social Justice and Development for the provision of these teaching and learning materials."

Mohamed Mattia, a member of the Children/Youth Parliament on Governance and Emerging Issues quoting the 2022 Mines and Minerals Act while talking to the National Mineral Agency and Environmental Protection Agency District representatives on the issues fueling mining conflict in the communities.
He said: "Diamonds was discovered in 1930 and it took Sierra Leone 79 years to have Mines and Minerals Act in 2009, that gave birth to National Minerals Agency, Sierra Leone and that act later reviewed in 2022. The surface rent is paid directly to the Chiefdoms. The land owners are not benefiting. Mining companies giving 1% is pittance. If there is value addition on our mineral resources, Ministries, Departments and Agencies will not be talking about financial constraints. "

Advocate for Social Justice and Development - A S J D- SL bids farewell to two (2) University Interns from Njala University having spent six (6) weeks with the organization.

Njala University Supervisor, Mr Dominic Tshombe from the Department of Banking, Finance & Economics paid a visit to assess the students on their internship.

The two (2) Students were Francess Mbaimba and Amadu Fomba Sesay from Banking and Finance Department.

Capacitated School Management Structures Make School System More Effective

With funds from ActionAid Sierra Leone, through the Ministry of Basic and Senior Secondary Education SL in Kono District has trained and capacitated 70 SMCs and Other Community Structures on School Governance Systems for 11 Schools in Nimiyama, Gangama Gorama and Nimikoro Chiefdoms at Lion Mountain Hotel in Koidu City.

The aim of the training is to strengthen the capacities of school governance structures to increase their supervision of schools and teachers in their communities, increase their knowledge on their roles and responsibilities, enhance quality teaching and learning, create safe and inclusive learning environments, involve in education financing and help manage school resources to maintenance school buildings and furniture.

This capacity building brought from each community or school, the SMC Chairperson, Community Chief, CTA Chairperson, Head Teacher, Mothers Club Chairlady and Young person. The training covers the legal basis of establishing a school management committee, sections of the 2023 MBSSE Act, the composition of SMCs, how the committee should operate, nature and types of meetings, tenure of office, roles and key functions of the SMCs etc..
Each School Management Committee did achievable action points during plenary that the SAQOs in their communities and ASJD staff will monitor in their respective schools from the 31st of August to the 30th of September, 2026. The recent SMC manuals were distributed to each school for ease of references.

The Town Chief of Condama Community, Madam Kumba Yarjah said: "The training is very timely. I didn't know the role of the community in help the school to run effectively. We need to put our hands together to support the education of our children. One finger cannot take a palm fruit. As an SMC member, I now know clearly my roles and responsibilities and as a Town Chief too. I will definitely call a meeting to take necessary measures in supporting the school activities and cleaning before school reopens, regularly supervise the school and talk to parents or care givers to support the children and some challenges of the school."

Synopsis of the Second Sitting session of the Children/Youth Parliament to address Emerging Governance issues in Kono District. It's an initiative seeking to promote quality service delivery and strengthen accountability and transparency among public institutions in the district. This parliament is composed of vibrant youths participants from loose groups, community based organizations and persons with passion to add their voices in accountable governance.
It's a grooming ground for young people and children voices to be heard.

The Children/Youth Parliament Publishes it First Position Paper

The Children/Youth Parliament on Governance and Emerging Issues affecting Kono District, established by Advocate for Social Justice and Development - A S J D- SL with funds from ActionAid Sierra Leone has published it first Position Paper on wide range of issues affecting the district development, accountability and efficient services delivery.

The Position Paper hinches on issues around the closure of Koidu/Octea Mining Company and the alleged non-payments of benefits, delay is payments of Councils grants and Schools Fees Subsidies that affect efficient service delivery, the overdue delay on the construction of the Koidu-Kamiyandor road and the Kono University of Science and Technology, Drug abuse among young people, School feeding bottlenecks; amongst other key findings and proffered workable recommendations.
