OFFICIAL DEATH ANNOUNCEMENT

It is with profound sadness and deep regret that Network Empowerment for Young Generation Sierra Leone (NEYG-SL) announces the passing of our dedicated School Focal Person, Mr. Umaru Bangalie, who served under our School Wellbeing Initiative at Islamic Secondary School, Kenema.

Mr. Bangalie passed away at 1:20 a.m. this morning at Kenema Government Hospital.

Mr. Bangalie was a committed educator and a passionate advocate for the wellbeing of children and young people. Through his dedication, humility, and service, he made a meaningful contribution to the implementation of the School Wellbeing Initiative and positively impacted the lives of many students and colleagues. His passing is a great loss to our organization, the school community, his family, and the nation.

On behalf of the Board, Management, staff, volunteers, and partners of NEYG-SL, we extend our heartfelt condolences to his family, friends, colleagues, and the entire Islamic Secondary School community during this difficult time.

May the Almighty grant him eternal peace, comfort his loved ones, and give us all the strength to bear this irreparable loss.

Today, 24th July 2026, Network Empowerment for Young Generation Sierra Leone (NEYG-SL) successfully hosted its first Board Membership Meeting with its newly appointed Board Members.

During the meeting, the Executive Director took members through the organization's journey since its establishment on 17th February 2025, highlighting its growth, governance systems, organizational policies, and key achievements. The presentation showcased NEYG-SL's impact through child protection interventions, the School Wellbeing Initiative, entrepreneurship training programmes, climate action initiatives, and other community development efforts.

The meeting marked an important milestone in strengthening the organization's governance and reaffirming the Board's commitment to providing strategic guidance and supporting NEYG-SL's mission of empowering young people and building resilient communities.

Today, 20th July 2026, the Network Empowerment for Young Generation Sierra Leone (NEYG-SL) officially launched its Community Dialogue for Sustainable Waste and Disaster Management Actions Initiative in three communities within Kenema City: Kpetema, Nyandiama, and Lambayama.

The initiative commenced with community engagement meetings where the NEYG-SL team introduced the project's objectives and emphasized the importance of working collaboratively with community stakeholders, youth leaders, religious leaders, women, and other residents to promote sustainable waste management and reduce the risks of disasters, particularly flooding.

As part of the day's activities, the NEYG-SL staff conducted community walk-throughs to identify major waste disposal hotspots and assess environmental challenges contributing to flooding. Following these assessments, the team and community representatives agreed to organize coordinated community clean-up sessions aimed at improving sanitation, reducing indiscriminate waste disposal, and strengthening community resilience against flooding.

NEYG-SL remains committed to empowering communities through active participation, environmental stewardship, and collective action to create cleaner, healthier, and more resilient communities in Kenema City.

Today, 18th July,2026 Network Empowerment for Young Generation Sierra Leone (NEYG-SL) was honored to participate in the 2nd Parliamentary Sitting of Kid Parliament, Kenema Chapter, following an invitation from the Kid Parliament.

Representing the organization were our Gender and Child Protection Officer and Program Officer, who joined children, youth representatives, and other stakeholders in discussing the effects of Female Ge***al Mutilation (FGM) on girls.

The parliamentary sitting provided an important platform for young people to raise their voices on issues affecting children and to advocate for the protection of girls from harmful traditional practices. Discussions highlighted the physical, psychological, educational, and social consequences of FGM and emphasized the collective responsibility of communities, institutions, and policymakers to safeguard the rights and well-being of every child.

NEYG-SL remains committed to promoting child protection, gender equality, and the empowerment of children and young people through advocacy, awareness creation, and partnerships. We appreciate the invitation from Kid Parliament, Kenema Chapter, and reaffirm our commitment to supporting initiatives that advance the rights and welfare of children across Sierra Leone.

Poor waste management and disaster(Flooding) reoccurrence in kenema city communties ( Nyandiama, kpetema and Lambayama) is now a serious threat to the people residing in these communities, exposing them to several diseases and unprepared relocation as the result of heavy flooding. This has seriously affected the wellbeing of children, women and Youth. As we navigate the raining season,
NEYG-SL is pleased to introduce the Community Dialogue for Sustainable Waste and Disaster Management Actions, a two-month initiative taking place from July to August 2026 in Nyandiyama, Kpetema, and Lambayama communities in Kenema City.

The initiative aims to address poor waste management, environmental pollution, and disaster risks through a community-led approach. Working closely with community chiefs, youth leaders, women leaders, religious leaders, and other stakeholders, the project will promote collaboration and collective action for cleaner, safer, and more resilient communities.

Key activities will include:

- Community dialogue sessions with local stakeholders.
- Community clean-up campaigns to improve environmental sanitation.
- Intensive training on disaster preparedness, disaster risk reduction, and sustainable waste management.
- Development of community-led strategies and action plans to strengthen long-term waste and disaster management.

Through this initiative, NEYG-SL seeks to empower communities with the knowledge, skills, and partnerships needed to protect the environment, reduce disaster risks, and promote sustainable development.

We look forward to working with community members, government institutions, development partners, civil society organizations, and all stakeholders to make this initiative a success.

Yesterday, 27th June 2026, our Executive Director, had the honour of representing the organization at the invitation of our esteemed partner, Women Awareness Advocacy Network Sierra Leone (WAAN-SL), where he served as the Chief Judge for a Quiz and Debate Competition involving five secondary schools in Kenema District.

The competition was organized as part of WAAN-SL's commitment to supporting the Government of Sierra Leone's efforts to promote quality education, critical thinking, public speaking, and academic excellence among young people.

Today, 20th June 2026, hosted by TOP RADIO in Kenema, the team of four staff ( Gender protection and Safegaurding officer, Communication officer, Agriculture and environmental sustainability officer, and our volunteer) from Network Empowerment for Young Generation Sierra Leone (NEYG-SL) participated in a thought-provoking radio discussion on the topic, "The Roles of Youth in Community and National Development."

Representing the organization, the team emphasized that young people are not merely beneficiaries of development but active drivers of positive change. They highlighted the importance of creating inclusive spaces where young people can meaningfully participate in decision-making processes, contribute innovative ideas, and utilize their talents and skills to address societal challenges.

The discussion underscored the role of youth in promoting peace, social cohesion, civic responsibility, entrepreneurship, and community development. They further stressed that with adequate support, investment, and access to opportunities, young people possess the potential to transform their communities and contribute significantly to national growth and sustainable development.

The organization also called on government institutions, development partners, community leaders, and other stakeholders to continue investing in youth empowerment initiatives and to recognize young people as key partners in building a prosperous, inclusive, and resilient Sierra Leone.

Day of the African Child Commemoration – 16 June 2026

Today, 16 June 2026, at our little corner, NEYG-SL joined child protection organizations, partners, and advocates across Africa to commemorate the Day of the African Child.

As part of the commemoration, we launched a media awareness campaign through flyers and, in collaboration with the Kenema City Library, held a short interactive session with children. Guided by the theme, "Empowering Our Children, Building Our Tomorrow," we engaged children on the importance of education as one of the most powerful tools for personal empowerment and for building a better future.

A short screening of Sarafina! was also organized to help children learn about the struggles and sacrifices made by black schoolchildren during the Soweto uprising in South Africa. The film provided an opportunity to reflect on the importance of children's rights, access to quality education, and the role young people play in shaping society.

Looking into the bright and hopeful faces of our beloved children today, we were reminded that investing in their education, protection, and well-being is not just a responsibility—it is an investment in a stronger, more prosperous tomorrow. Together, let us continue to create opportunities that empower every child to learn, grow, and achieve their full potential.
