SEND - SIERRA LEONE

SEND - SIERRA LEONE The UNDP Human Poverty Index ranks Sierra Leone amongst one of the ten poorest nations in the world. It also found that few NGOs were addressing these issues.

SEND is a national NGO that implements development projects on community development, WaSH (Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene), healthcare, nutrition and agriculture, climate change adaptation, gender-transformative practices, and the empowerment of women. It has one of the highest maternal and child mortality rates, and over 60 percent of the population is illiterate. From 1994 to 2003, the country

was gripped by a destructive civil war. Though the conflict ended in 2004, Kailahun District, which was the worst affected by the war, continues to experience economic hardship, heightened by its remoteness from Freetown. The region has primarily received relief aid, but now requires significant development assistance to rehabilitate farms and revitalize economic activities. Women and girls in particular continue to suffer from lack of access to education, productive resources and health services. They remain the most impoverished and vulnerable members of society. SEND began working in Sierra Leone in 2004, when it was contracted by the Government of Sierra Leone and the World Bank as an Intervention Management Agency (IMA) participating in the implementation of the Sierra Leone HIV/AIDS Response Project. As an IMA, SEND was responsible for the appraisal of micro-project applications and monitoring the implementation of successful applicants. In December 2007, SEND carried out a feasibility study and needs assessment of Kailahun District. It found that, due to extreme poverty and food insecurity, there was great demand for interventions that aimed to improve incomes and agricultural practices. Based on this assessment, SEND developed the Livelihood Security Development Project, with support from CORDAID and Christian Aid. The Livelihoods Project aims to increased income and food security, as well as promote modern family planning practices and behaviours that prevent the spread of HIV. As a first step in the programme, three community credit unions have been established to provide savings and loan services. These credit unions are the hub through which other programme activities, such as microfinance and agricultural development, are implemented. In 2009, SEND expanded its programming to include the Kailahun Women in Governance Project, aimed to increase the participation of women in local and national governance. The programme works with the local political parties, the District Council, and grassroots women’s groups, with support from the Global Transparency Fund of DFID.

SEND - SIERRA LEONE was honored to host a distinguished delegation from Ireland’s Joint Committee on Foreign Affairs and Trade at our Headquarters in Kenema as part of their monitoring visit to Sierra Leone.

The delegation, accompanied by H.E. Patrick McManus, Ambassador of Ireland in Sierra Leone, engaged with SEND staff, partners, and beneficiaries to gain firsthand insight into the impact of development initiatives being implemented across communities.

The visit provided an opportunity to witness the transformative outcomes of the enduring partnership between the people of Ireland through their Irish Aid program and the people of Sierra Leone, particularly in advancing women’s empowerment, financial inclusion, good governance, accountability, education, and sustainable community development.

A key highlight of the visit was a live discussion on Nyapui Radio, where members of the delegation commended SEND Sierra Leone’s efforts in empowering women, strengthening communities, and promoting inclusive development. They also recognized Nyapui Radio as a vital platform for amplifying the voices of women and marginalized groups, fostering civic participation, and encouraging community dialogue.

The delegation further acknowledged the significant impact of Credit Unions and Village Savings and Loans Associations (VSLAs) in improving livelihoods and expanding financial opportunities for women. They praised the increasing number of women assuming leadership roles within their communities as a testament to the positive change being driven through these interventions.

We sincerely appreciate the continued support and partnership of the Government and people of Ireland. Together, we remain committed to building resilient, inclusive, and prosperous communities across Sierra Leone.

With support from the UNDP in Sierra Leone, SEND - SIERRA LEONE continues to empower communities through the Empowering Women in Agriculture, Sustainability, Marketing and Environment (EWASME) Project across Bonthe and Tonkolili districts.

Over the past weeks, we’ve conducted community awareness-raising sessions and Gender Model Family Trainings in several project communities, equipping women and men with practical knowledge and skills to promote gender equality, shared decision-making, mutual respect, and positive household relationships.

Participants explored issues around household power dynamics, gender roles and responsibilities, and the barriers that limit women's participation in family and community leadership. Through interactive discussions and group exercises, community members identified practical actions to foster inclusive households where women, men, girls, and boys can thrive equally.

In addition, comprehensive data collection exercises were conducted to assess the functionality of community groups, validate beneficiary information, and strengthen planning and implementation of project interventions.

The enthusiasm and commitment demonstrated by participants reflect a growing movement toward gender-responsive development, stronger family cohesion, and sustainable community transformation.

Together, we are creating pathways for women's empowerment, inclusive leadership, and resilient livelihoods.

As the world marks , we are reminded that environmental degradation is not a distant threat but it’s a reality already affecting thousands of lives and livelihoods across Sierra Leone.

Two months ago, in partnership with the Environment Protection Agency Sierra Leone and with support from Irish Aid Ireland in Sierra Leone, we launched the country's first comprehensive Environmental Loss and Damage Assessment Report. The findings present a sobering picture of the environmental challenges confronting our nation.

The assessment found that:

▪️ 60% of surveyed households experienced damage to homes and infrastructure.
▪️ 75% of affected households were displaced by environmental hazards.
▪️ Over Le23.7 billion in economic losses were recorded across key livelihood sectors.
▪️ Only 23% of Sierra Leoneans have access to safe drinking water at home.
▪️ Sierra Leone has lost approximately 30% of its forest cover, with annual losses increasing significantly in recent years.
▪️ Coastal erosion, flooding, deforestation, mining activities, pollution and poor waste management continue to threaten communities, ecosystems and economic growth.

Behind every statistic is a family displaced, a farmer who has lost productive land, a fisherman whose catch has declined, a community struggling with unsafe water, or an ecosystem pushed closer to collapse.

On this World Environment Day, we call on government institutions, environmental experts, development partners, civil society organizations, the private sector and citizens to use this evidence to drive collective action for environmental protection, climate resilience and sustainable development.

The future of Sierra Leone depends on the choices we make today.

Across selected schools in Kailahun, Kenema, and Karene districts, Pikin Tab learning sessions continue buzz with excitement as third-term activities progress.

Through support from Imagine Worldwide and in partnership with the Ministry of Basic and Senior Secondary Education SL, pupils are actively engaging with tablet-based learning, strengthening their literacy and numeracy skills, and building the confidence needed to succeed both inside and outside the classroom.

Every lesson completed, every new word mastered, and every arithmetic problem solved represents another step toward unlocking the potential of Sierra Leone’s next generation. Teachers continue to play a critical role in guiding learners, creating inclusive learning environments, and ensuring that every child has the opportunity to thrive.

From increased classroom participation to improved learning outcomes, the progress being witnessed across these schools demonstrates the power of innovative, technology-enabled learning in transforming education.

As the term progresses, we remain committed to supporting schools, teachers, and pupils on this journey of learning, growth, and transformation.

Together, we are nurturing brighter minds, stronger communities, and a more promising future for every child.
