Mangrove restoration is complex. The science is nuanced, the conditions vary and no two sites are never the same. But some principles hold true across the board.
Admist the restoration complexity, Earth Guardians still push forward on the Mangrove restoration efforts in Bonthe Island.

Raising the Next Generation of Earth Defenders in Bonthe Island Sierra Leone:

On March 13th and 14th, 2026, Earth Guardians Sierra Leone proudly hosted the Inter-Schools Environmental Quiz and Debate Competition—an inspiring gathering of young minds committed to protecting our planet.

Students from various schools came together to showcase their knowledge, critical thinking, and passion for environmental sustainability. Through thought-provoking debates and challenging quiz rounds, participants demonstrated a deep understanding of pressing issues such as climate change, deforestation, and pollution.

This event was more than a competition—it was a platform for empowerment. It nurtured confidence, leadership, and a sense of responsibility among young people to become active environmental stewards in their communities.

We celebrate all participants, winners, teachers, and partners who made this event a success. Your dedication is a powerful reminder that the future of our environment is in capable hands.

As we reflect on this impactful event, we invite more schools, organizations, and supporters to join us in building a greener, more sustainable Sierra Leone. Together, we can inspire change and protect our planet for generations to come.

On Bonthe Island, women play a pivotal role in mangrove conservation, becoming key agents of change in their communities. These dedicated individuals understand the vital importance of mangroves in protecting coastal ecosystems, supporting biodiversity, and enhancing local livelihoods. Through their involvement in conservation efforts, they not only safeguard the environment but also empower themselves and their families.

Women engage in various activities, including planting mangrove seedlings, participating in restoration projects, and educating their peers about sustainable practices. They organize community workshops that raise awareness about the ecological and economic benefits of mangroves, highlighting their role in fishing, tourism, and climate resilience.

Their work often extends beyond conservation, as they also take on leadership roles within their communities. By advocating for sustainable practices and influencing local policy, these women are making significant strides toward environmental stewardship and community development. Their efforts are vital in ensuring that Bonthe Island's rich natural heritage is preserved for future generations.
Thank you Paul M. Angell Family Foundation for the funding.

Margret Amara embarked on her journey as a field officer in the Earth Guardians Mangrove Biodiversity Conservation and Beekeeping Project in Bonthe Island, Sierra Leone, fueled by a deep passion for environmental preservation. Understanding the critical role mangroves play in protecting coastal ecosystems, she engaged the local community through education and awareness campaigns. Margret organized workshops to teach sustainable practices, highlighting the importance of mangroves in biodiversity and their role in mitigating climate change.

Recognizing the need for alternative livelihoods, she introduced beekeeping as a sustainable income source, training community members on eco-friendly practices. As locals began to embrace both mangrove restoration and beekeeping, Margret witnessed a remarkable transformation: the rejuvenation of mangrove forests and the rise of a thriving beekeeping culture. Her dedication not only fostered environmental stewardship but also empowered the community, creating a legacy of resilience and sustainability that will benefit generations to come.

*Interesting Facts About Mangrove Honey You Didn’t Know!!*
Mangrove honey is a unique and delicious type of honey that is produced in tropical climates. It is made from the nectar of mangrove trees.

*Mangrove Honey Flavor:*

The mangroves trees that produce this type of honey grow in saltwater environments, and their honey is known for its distinct flavor.
In fact, mangrove honey has a slightly salty taste to it due to this marine environment. It is a thick, light brown honey with a strong flavor that some people describe as being similar to butterscotch or licorice.

*Beneficial Properties Found in Mangrove Honey:*

Mangrove honey has several unique properties that make it a valuable commodity. For example, it is high in antioxidants, which makes it beneficial for your health. The biblical perspective on humanity's relationship with the environment is deeply rooted in the concept of stewardship. In the Book of Genesis, God entrusts humanity with the responsibility of caring for the Earth, as seen in Genesis 1:26-28, where humans are created in God's image and given dominion over all living things. This dominion is not a license for exploitation, but rather a call to stewardship, emphasizing the importance of nurturing and preserving the natural world. The values associated with this stewardship include respect, care, and responsibility. Respect for creation acknowledges that the Earth and all its inhabitants are part of God's creation, deserving of honor and protection. Care involves actively engaging in practices that protect the environment, such as sustainable living, conservation, and restoration of ecosystems. Responsibility extends to recognizing the impact of human actions on the planet and making choices that promote ecological balance and health. Being an Earth Guardian embodies these biblical values. It signifies a commitment to protect and sustain the environment for present and future generations. Earth Guardians act as advocates for ecological justice, understanding that environmental degradation often disproportionately affects vulnerable populations. They strive to educate others about the importance of environmental stewardship, promote sustainable practices, and engage in community efforts to address environmental issues. In essence, the role of Earth Guardians is to reconcile humanity's needs with the health of the planet, ensuring that the natural world can thrive alongside human development. This holistic approach reflects a deep-seated belief that caring for the Earth is not only a moral obligation but a sacred duty, aligning with the biblical call to be responsible stewards of God's creation.
