LET THE VOICES OF OUR COMMUNITIES BE HEARD!

Today, we bring together five communities Heigbema, Koyagbema, Pujehun, Fornikoh, and Samai Town for an engaging competition on the Prohibition of Child Marriage Act 2024.

Today 24 September,2026. Wehad a meaningful engagement with BRAC, where we discussed youth leadership, participation, skills development, and the importance of creating spaces where young people can think for themselves and take ownership of the processes that affect their lives. We shared how our organization works with children and young people, and how, as a youth-led organization, we create opportunities for young people to participate, lead, develop skills, and contribute meaningfully to their communities.

We also explained our work with VTA, particularly how we support children and young people through business opportunities, skills development, and pathways toward work and self-reliance.
One interesting reflection was how, as individuals, we often think of BRAC mainly as an organization involved in microfinance and providing financial support. However, through this engagement, we also discussed and learned more about BRAC’s work in advocacy, youth development, and other programs that support young people.

We shared how we create a pathway from our Adolescence Council to the Youth Council, giving young people opportunities to grow, participate, lead, and take on greater responsibilities. It was inspiring to share that some of the children and young people who started through these structures have now become staff members within the organization. Most importantly, we emphasized that young people should not only be seen as advocates. They should also be given the space to contribute their knowledge, skills, ideas, and expertise in their areas of interest.

When young people are given the space to think, lead, and own the process, they don’t just participate they become part of the solution.

Five Days of Radio Conversations and Community Engagement.

From 16–20 September 2026, we wrapped up five days of meaningful radio conversations and community engagement on the Prohibition of Child Marriage Act 2024.

It was more than just being on the radio. It was a week of learning, sharing experiences, asking important questions, and having honest conversations about how we can better protect children and support young people in our communities.

We were grateful to be joined by partners who contributed their knowledge, experiences, and perspectives, helping to make each conversation more engaging and impactful.

Together, we created space for communities to listen, learn, speak up, and better understand the importance of protecting children from child marriage. A sincere thank you to everyone who joined the conversations, shared their voices, contributed to the discussions, and helped make these five days meaningful. 

The conversation may have ended on air, but the work to protect children and empower young people continues.

Yesterday on 18th September 2026, Network for children's empowerment Sierra Leone - netce-sl successfully concluded the disbursement of business support funds and certification of youth beneficiaries at its Head Office in Kenema.

Through the Youth Empowerment Scheme (YES), young people who successfully completed a six-week Business and Entrepreneurship Class received financial support to help them start or strengthen their proposed businesses. They were also awarded certificates in recognition of their successful completion of the training.

The event also featured the certification of beneficiaries who completed a three-week Handcraft Skills Training in bead making and crochet, followed by an entrepreneurship and business session designed to strengthen their capacity to transform their skills into sustainable livelihood opportunities.

The Handcraft Skills Training was implemented under the Joint Collaborative Grant by Purposeful, while the YES classes form part of the Vision Trust Award (VTA) Grant 2026.

These initiatives are supported and funded by Purposeful and implemented by NetCE-SL, with the aim of equipping young people with practical skills, entrepreneurial knowledge, and resources to improve their livelihoods.

The ceremony was graced by stakeholders, including a Chief from Samai Town 2, one of the benefiting communities, a representative from Rainbow Initiative Sierra Leone – Kenema, and parents of the beneficiaries.

Yesterday was not just about certificates and financial support.

It was about recognising effort, investing in potential, and creating opportunities for young people to build a better future.

Congratulations to all the beneficiaries on this important achievement!
