Strengthening Cocoa Farming in Our Communities 🍫
We successfully conducted a Cocoa Farmers Registration, Farm Inspection, and Mapping exercise in communities across Kenema District. The activity aimed to improve the cocoa value chain by creating a reliable database of farmers, understanding farm conditions, and accurately mapping cocoa farms using GPS technology.
During the exercise, cocoa farmers were registered and key information about their farms was collected. Field visits were also carried out to inspect cocoa farms and assess the health of cocoa trees, farm maintenance practices, and challenges affecting production such as pests, aging trees, and limited access to inputs.
Farm mapping was another important part of the activity. Using GPS devices, the team captured the locations and boundaries of cocoa farms. This will help improve traceability, strengthen agricultural planning, and support future development programs for cocoa farmers.
The engagement with farmers also created an opportunity to discuss good agricultural practices, including proper pruning, shade management, and effective pest and disease control to improve productivity and sustainability.
This exercise marks an important step toward building a strong database of cocoa farmers and strengthening the cocoa sector in our communities. With continued support, training, and collaboration, cocoa farmers can increase production and improve their livelihoods.
Together, we continue working to support farmers and promote sustainable cocoa farming for a better future.
